Whether the President sees it or not, here are some tips on sending your opinionated letter to the President. Since this is the leader of the free world that we’re talking about, there are a few things we have to consider.

1. The Paper

The White House considers that you compose your letter on 8.5 by 11-inch paper, which is the standard size for most A4 paper. The quality of the paper is not important, however, you must remember your letter will go through a few other hands once it arrives at the White House. So keep this in mind when finding a paper that is durable through all of this.

2. The Method

You have to think about how you’re going to write this. While handwritten letters are more personal sometimes they are considered “illegible.” If you are handwriting your letter, you must use a dark ink pen and write as neatly as possible. Avoid small or cursive writing. If you decide to type your letter, stick to a 10 to 12-point font size and avoid italics.

3. The Message

When it comes to the message you are sending, anything goes. Unless it’s a threat, of course. This means anything, whether you wish to speak about a personal issue, any frustrations, accepting their support, or even voicing your opinion on any policies. Keep in mind that writing letters to the President is extremely popular all over the country, so it may be that your letter does not get read. With that being said, what do you have to lose? You must also consider a respectful tone to use.

4. Mailing

The final part of sending your letter to the President is how to mail it. All correspondents should address their letters to:

The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC, 20500

Make sure you include a return address on the letter. Place a stamp in the upper right-hand corner, and mail it as you usually would at your local post office.

Choosing to write to the White House is a big step in freedom of speech, and should it help to change any current or future policies, then you’re doing something right.
