Maritza from the Netflix hit TV series “Narcos” proves that while not all female characters in the drug ring have to be ruthless, innocence comes with a price.

“Narcos” leads like Tata Escobar and Judy Moncada certainly demonstrate the need for women hold their own amongst crime-driven men; however, Maritza’s character is a breath of fresh air on the show.

When we first meet Maritza, we’re immediately taken aback by her pious character, her cascading brunette hair and mesmerizing eyes. Limon brings her into the world of Pablo Escobar and takes her on a wild ride full of backstabbing and near-death experiences.

As she tries to find her place among characters who lack the ability to differentiate right from wrong, Maritza remains the show’s moral compass. Even as Limon continues to make her an accomplice to illegal activities, Maritza finds the courage to prioritize protecting herself and her little girl.

2 Maritza shows what happens to most innocent people in the drug trade.

Martina García, the actress who plays Maritza, tells the Huffington Post that she, too, believes that Maritza represents “innocent people that get swept up into the drug business without really knowing it.”

Unfortunately, however, innocence won’t get anyone very far in such a deadly environment. In order to truly survive, you’ve got to have a tough interior and exterior.

But since Maritza never really became anything like Tata or Judy, Limón – who got her into the drug cartel mess – ends up shooting her after she provokes him. Maritza’s baby is seated next to her when she’s shot and Limón flees, revealing the ugly side of drug cartels. It’s often the innocent ones who pay for everyone else’s mistakes.

Although Martina García is a fresh face to many American viewers, she’s been in a long list of Colombian television shows and movies, including and “Biutiful” and “La Guerra de las Rosas.” On top of that, she also recently appeared in an episode of Showtime’s “Homeland.”

Typically, the 32-year-old actress is skeptical of shows and movies that depict the story of Pablo Escobar because she grew up in Colombia during these violent and turbulent times. However, “Narcos” was her exception.

“It’s an amazing show, a high-quality project with a lot of research behind it,” she tells E! News. “I believe that out of all everything out there on this topic, this is the most responsible one with collecting and presenting the most accurate information.”

4 Expect to see Martina Garcia playing other captivating roles in the future.

Maritza’s character may have been short-lived in “Narcos,” but she doesn’t have to be the end of your Martina García experience. Right now, García has two films on the way: “Backseat Fighter,” an indie film shot in Spain, and “In Search of Ingrid,” which is still in the works. She also recently did a TV mini-series titled “Blanca,” where she plays the main character, Blanca.

Aside from those roles, García is looking to play female characters who can stand their own ground. “I love to play characters that have their own story going on, especially as a woman,” she tells the Huffington Post. “It’s important to play a character that has her own trajectory outside of being a male character’s love interest. I like playing a girl who is a little tough and has sharp edges.”
