NAME: Carolina Herrera

LIFETIME: January 8, 1939 – Present

WHAT SHE IS KNOWN FOR: Carolina Herrera, one of the famous women in history, is a Venezuelan-American fashion designer, known for dressing first ladies such as Jackie O. and Michelle Obama.

WHY WE LOVE HER: Carolina’s socialite grandmother first introduced her to the world of fashion, taking her to Balenciaga shows and buying her Dior. She said, “My eye was accustomed to pretty things.” At age 18, she married Guillermo Behrens Tello, with whom she had two daughters. The couple later divorced. She then married Don Reinaldo Herrera Guevara, and she carried the title of Marquise until 1992. They also had two daughters.

In 1965, Carolina began working for Emilio Pucci and moved to work at the boutique store in 1980. In 1972, she made the International Best Dressed list for the first time, and in 1980 entered the Hall of Fame. A year later she began work on her own clothing line, on the advice of her friend, and then Vogue editor, Diana Vreeland. Her first runway show featured at then new model, Iman. She now presents her Ready-to-Wear collection semiannually at New York Fashion Week. She has been featured on the cover of Vogue seven times.

FUN FACT: Carolina was associated with Mick and Bianca Jagger and Andy Warhol at Studio 54. It was here that she became known for her dramatic style, and they encouraged her designs. It was also here that she became one of the famous women in history!
