The Early Life Of Molly Burke

Molly Burke was born in Ottawa, Canada on February 8th, 1994. She was not born blind, however, she never had depth perception. At age four she was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, which affects the retina and eventually destroys sight. There is no way of telling when retinitis pigmentosa will take full effect, but for Molly, it happened when she was only fourteen. She experienced horrific bullying, including a traumatic event when a group of girls lead her to a forest and then abandoned her. The bullying contributed to her depression, and her parents decided to move her to a school for the blind when she was in the 9th grade. She attended that school until she was in the 11th grade when she returned to public school. The bullying was less intense this time, and she had gathered a support system.

After graduation, she wanted to follow in her brothers’ footsteps and volunteer in Africa. No organizations were willing to take Molly. Finally, she found the Me to We organization, which was willing to take her on a trip to Kenya. They had her speak at a girls’ school and she found what made her soul happy. She has been a motivational speaker ever since.

Molly turned a challenging experience into one that teaches and inspires people. She is open about the fact that it has not been easy for her, but she has overcome the depression she experienced after losing her sight. Molly is now an activist. She dedicates her life to encouraging people to have a positive attitude and push through hardships. When she was only five, she spoke as an ambassador for The Foundation Fighting Blindness in Canada. She has shared a stage with everyone from Malala Yousafzai to Demi Lovato.

She has touched so many lives with her public speaking and her videos.  In 2017 she partnered with Dove to do a campaign for them based around how our differences make us unique. She also partnered with Special K’s and the UN’s Girl Up program to help women find and develop their inner strength. Molly dedicates her life to making sure everyone finds their voice and uses it for empowerment.

Molly has made quite a name for herself on YouTube. Her videos focus on her daily life, her passions such as makeup and fashion. She rarely makes her videos entirely about her blindness. The videos that do discuss her blindness are mainly centered around clearing up misconceptions and educating the public about blind-related issues. She has collaborated with some of the biggest names on YouTube and is enjoying her life as a vlogger.

“I Am Not Broken”

Molly Burke has one of the most powerful stories and hearing it would inspire anyone. Her confidence and strength are awe-inspiring. Molly also has an amazingly witty sense of humor. She is someone you absolutely need to check out. It is easy to lose yourself in her videos and feel as if you know her because she is so personable.

Her perspective on the world is quite unique. At a speaking event for the Western University of Health Science in Pomona, California she said: “I am not broken, and I don’t need to be fixed, society does.” If any sentence sums up Molly’s entire mission and brand, it is that sentence. Unfortunately, that statement rings true for many people with disabilities, both physical and mental. But luckily there are people like Molly who are dedicating their lives to make society realize how it excludes people. This incredible person is wise beyond her years and her content is sure to enlighten and entertain everyone.
