Pixar hit “Finding Dory” may be favorite to win the best animated film Oscar but this charming six minute short, which debuted alongside the fishy film, is getting Oscar buzz too in the best animated short film category – especially now that it has launched online and started trending.

The short film follows a young sandpiper as it discovers the world outside the nest. Piper’s mama teaches the young bird how to search for and catch prey in the sand. At first afraid of the waves, the hungry bird makes a friend – a young crab exploring the ocean for the first time – and learns to enjoy the thrill of the watery shoreline.

“Piper” is hailed as “arguably Disney-Pixar’s best short film yet,” according to Bored Panda. Critics and fans alike are praising the clarity of the graphics and the lifelikeness of the animals. Business Insider says the film “animates what are probably two of the most difficult things to illustrate and make look realistic — sand and water” in one of Pixar’s best short to date.

“Piper” was released alongside “Finding Dory ,” which grossed $422.5 million in the U.S. alone. In addition, “Dory” was Pixar’s biggest opener and biggest domestic hit in history. According to Screen Crush, the film made $135 million in its first weekend in theaters.

However, “Piper” is getting its fair share of buzz. It contends alongside 70 other short films, including Disney’s “Inner Workings” and another Pixar short, “Borrowed Time.” Watch the video above to catch Pixar’s first reveal of Piper.
