The Oscar nominations are out but the big announcement is not the cause for excitement it always used to be.
That’s because other awards shows have recently eclipsed the venerable Academy Awards in terms of spectacle, star quality and suspense.
“La La Land” leads the pack with a record equaling 14 nominations and it will surely sweep most of the prizes too when the Oscars are handed out on Feb. 26 – so if we all know that what’s the point of watching the ceremony?
ENTITY identifies six other award shows that are more worth watching and why.
MTV’s Video Music Awards can always rely on an unscripted moment to steal the headlines – usually provided by Kanye West. How funny it would be to see Kanye run on stage at the Oscars, grab the best actor prize from Casey Affleck’s hands and say, “Ammalet you finish, but Denzel Washington should have won!”

Not only is the surfboard trophy so unusual and cool but several winners are covered in green gunge. How fantastic would that be at the Oscars? Look out Meryl Streep – you’re about to get slimed!
Broadway’s finest perform on this show, guaranteeing the musical numbers are better than anything the Oscars can serve up. Last year’s Tony performance by the cast of “Hamilton” was one of the best awards show moments ever.

This award show has soared in popularity since realizing it’s about the performances rather than the awards – from contemporary stars like Beyoncé, Adele, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift to classic acts like Paul McCartney, all of music’s greats come together on the same stage and are given a primetime platform to entertain.
The British Academy Film Awards are so much more classy than the Oscars. The Hollywood ceremony is held in a shopping mall (true) while the BAFTAs always involve royalty. The pre-party is at Kensington Palace and the ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall. Permanent host Stephen Fry also adds a further touch of class. Winners never get played off if their speeches go long but can say what they like for as long as they like. Rule Britannia!

There is booze on every table, meaning the acceptance speeches are a lot more eccentric and unpredictable than at the dry Oscars. Plus you can usually rely on a political statement to hit the headlines, as with Meryl Streep’s takedown of Donald Trump this year.
