Kofi Siriboe’s portrayal of Ralph Angel, “Queen Sugar’s” single father trying to honor his father’s wishes as a second class citizen, has taken the show by storm.

“Queen Sugar” found a diamond in the rough with him.

Not only is his character unique and free of overused tropes, the actor who channels this character embodies all the pain Angel is meant to represent.

Props to the casting crew for this one.

With all the hurt, pain and struggle Ralph Angel carries on a day-to-day basis, Siriboe never fails to fill a room with his presence.

Angel’s humility glistens in his dark eyes. His chocolate skin is cocoa butter smooth, but his roughened hands signal a man who works from sun up to sun down. And his smile is mind-melting. There couldn’t have been an actor more aesthetically fitting to play this role.

How Kofi Siriboe’s Background Makes Him Perfect to Play Ralph Angel

A large part of Ralph Angel’s charm is his realness. As Ava Duvernay explains in her OWN interview, she wanted to avoid creating a caricature of his character as much as possible. Since Ralph Angel was the first male character of his kind, she needed someone unique. She needed her actor to be able to embody Ralph Angel’s complexity. Kofi Siriboe does just that.

In large part, this authenticity comes from his mother and the strong women in his life. As Siriboe explains in an Elle interview, he’s been surrounded by strong black women all of his life. They’ve taught him to be woke, humble and persevering.

Ladies, he even knew about the marginalization of black women in society and how we’re ostracized by colorism in our own communities. As if we needed another reason to love this man.

Here’s How Kofi Siriboe Channels Ralph Angel, ‘Queen Sugar’s’ Gem.

His exposure and open-mindedness to the plight of black women help explain why he nails Ralph Angel’s character.

Kofi Siriboe didn’t grow up with a father, but he got to see his mother try and raise him by herself. Through that, he noticed the pain she endured to make sure he grew up as a good man. Kofi then uses these life lessons to channel his own single father role on the show. He knows what it’s like to have someone watch your every move and the challenge that comes with being the person you want your child to be.

It wouldn’t hurt to try and emulate Kofi Siriboe, brothers. And sisters, it wouldn’t hurt to try and date men (or raise men) like him either. We should all pour out support for men who respect women, understand our struggles and support us the way we support them. Can I get an amen?
