Soccer star Abby Wambach has found a new love off the field with Christian author and mommy blogger Glennon Doyle Melton.
This relationship news comes after Wambach, the highest goalscorer in US women’s national soccer team history, made a public admission of substance abuse in her recent bestselling memoir, “Forward.”
Melton is also known for her transparency, having been described by The Washington Post as “the ‘ultimate confessional writer’ for her honest portrayals of her struggling marriage, addiction and eating disorder.”
Her latest Twitter post revealed this new relationship as well as her sexuality to her followers – perhaps a bold move considering her largely conservative audience.
Olympic gold medalist and World Cup winner Wambach was previously married to former soccer player Sarah Huffman, but they faced rocky waters after Wambach’s DUI arrest and announced their divorce two months ago. Melton also confirmed her divorce with her husband of 14 years, who still joins in on friendly family dinners.

In an interview with Good Morning America last September, Wambach explained her reasoning about being so open about her struggles in her autobiography. While her statement was about her addiction to alcohol and prescription drugs, it could be echoed in support of members of the LGBTQ community.
“To be unashamed about something and to feel like you can actually help people through your story with whatever they may be going through … I think it’s a story that needs to be told,” said Wambach.
