Entity reviews five female duos that will add girl power to your music playlist.Credit: Gavin Whitner / musicoomph.com

We all preach girl power, but do we play it?

Although feminists like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé are bumpin’ from your speakers, there are some quieter voices in the music scene that may be missing from your iTunes library. These seriously rad female duos are definitely knocking the patriarchy off the Billboard charts with style. Let’s give these ten ladies a shout for singing out and speaking up for women around the world.

Here are five female music duos on ENTITY’s #girlpower playlist:

1 Tegan and Sara

The Quin twins truly are a modern sister act. The Canadians are not “soary” about being open about their sexuality; they embrace their LGBTQ identity to write honest songs that speak to their community. With a new 2016 album that makes our ‘04 hearts flutter, the powerhouse has shifted their sound from alternative to mainstream without losing their indie cred. We’re listening to “100x” on repeat (more like 1000x).

2 78Violet (aka Aly & AJ)

Remember Aly & AJ? Turns out the Disney stars didn’t disappear after all. They rebranded their fame into 78Violet and released a hauntingly beautiful track “Hothouse.” While we haven’t heard any new tunes from these female actresses since 2013, Entertainment Weekly confirms via Instagram that this musical pair is back in the studio.

3 Garfunkel and Oates

Think Weird Al meets Zooey Deschanel. This female duo brings laughs back into the music scene with quirky comedic tunes Simon and Hall would love. They sing about all the things we don’t wanna talk about through hits like “Weed Card” and “Gay Boyfriend.” Although they have less Spotify listens than the rest of the ladies on this list, their new Netflix series may help boost their popularity in the entertainment world.

4 The Veronicas

These Aussie beauties hit the U.S. charts back in 2005 and haven’t slowed down since. The electric beats and feminist lyrics definitely deliver a power punch. With romantic breakups, record label splits and even a lawsuit with Archie Comics under their wings, these strong women have survived the business. Their new single “In My Blood” proves the gals are definitely “4ever” in our music veins.

5 First Aid Kit

Fleet Foxes fans listen up: First Aid Kit may be their female counterpart. The popular Seattle band applauded the Swedish lady duo after they covered the hit “Tiger Mountain Peasant Song” on YouTube back in ’08. Since then, the Stockholm sisters have gained a bit of a cult following and toured all over the world. These females have definitely taken indie to a whole new level. “Stay Gold,” girls.
