ENTITY Zazie Beets

Zazie Beets is showing the world that natural beauty is a strong weapon to have in your arsenal.

Beets is already changing the game with her acting. Although she’s still a relatively new face, Beets proves she is a force to be reckoned with.

Beets is most known for her role on the comedy-drama “Atlanta.” She plays Vanessa, the on-again, off-again girlfriend of Earn, played by Donald Glover. In her role as Vanessa, Beets is the sense of sanity within the hustle to get the bills paid, according to Interview Magazine

However, Beets is showing she can do more in her newest role.

A New Chapter

Beets wowed audiences this summer with her role as Domino in “Deadpool 2.” However, she explained to GQ that she did not initially see herself in this role.

“I’m more of a drama girl. Drama and crying, stuff like that. But it’s pretty cool! To have, like, a super suit… I don’t know, I never thought I’d do something like that! It’s surreal, I don’t know it’s completely sunk in yet,” Beets stated.

“I never really pictured [a superhero movie] would be my trajectory. I was nervous, because you sign onto a franchise and you’re contracted with them to continue on with the story, and you don’t really know what you’re signing up for. But I liked the idea of introducing the live-action version of a character,” she continued.

As Domino, Beets is developing herself as an actress and taking on roles outside her comfort zone. It’s also outside the comfort zone of comics fans.

A Defining Role

In most comics depictions, Domino is alabaster white with a black spot around her eye. However, according to Vanity Fair, Beets “does away with the character’s traditionally short, straight hair in favor of her own natural skyward fro. The black spot is replaced with a cloudy white one.”

The fact that a biracial woman has taken on this role speaks volumes of how progressive the world is becoming.

“I think black women are often depicted specifically in terms of the struggle, and never having the privilege of feeling light at heart and feeling that release, right? And that is a pretty cool thing to see on a screen,” Beets shared with Vanity Fair.

By playing Domino, Zazie Beets is not only showing the world that black women can play a variety of roles, but that young black girls can do anything.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t fit the “standard.” If you can dream it, you can do it.

Naturally Beautiful

Beets shared with USA TODAY that she was encouraged by Ryan Reynolds and producers to wear her natural hair. She described it as a “wonderful opportunity to showcase my hair texture on a mainstream platform.”

The growing popularity of natural hair in mainstream media is monumental, so showing Domino with natural hair is a statement on its own.

It’s a depiction of self-love. We’re now in an era where we can embrace our natural hair and make our own definitions of beauty, despite what the fashion and beauty industries say is standard. Other movies like “Black Panther” showcase natural hair, only adding to the movement.

No longer do we have to keep things the way they’ve been. Finally, we can change the status quo and give the world a new, fresh perspective on anything.

Zazie Beets is not only building a name for herself. She’s also building a platform for women just like her.
