ENTITY reports on best horror movies 2015

While we admit that some epic horror movies have come out this year (we’re looking at you Jordan Peele), 2015 is still our favorite year for horror films. They didn’t hold back.

During this time, there was an uprising of more independent horror films. And with the emergence of new directors, horror movies in 2015 pioneered a new age of thrillers.

Here are our favorites from that year.

1 “It Follows”

This psychological horror by David Robert Mitchell introduces the idea that our real-life problems are our worst nightmares. This movie depicts a young woman who becomes cursed with an STC (sexually transmitted curse) after going out on a date.

The victim spends most of the movie being followed by a spiritual entity, and she has to run away from it before it kills her. If STDs haunt you enough already, then you might want to stay away from this film.

But believe it or not, this movie isn’t actually trying to warn you about the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases. Mitchell told The Guardian that the movie focuses on sex and love. It’s meant to portray the two aspects of life that help us escape death.

2 “Unfriended”

This supernatural horror film by Leo Gabriadze explores the horrors of internet bullying. When a girl commits suicide after being relentlessly bullied due to a video of her passing out and defecating at a party, her “friends” suffer the consequences. After her death, the bullies are terrorized by an anonymous online presence.

While the idea that online bullying is dangerous isn’t new, this film’s portrayal is. By exploring topics such as revenge porn, this movie portrays how the internet has ruined multiple lives. It might also keep you off Skype for a while. Just a fair warning.

3 “The Visit”

In this M. Night Shyamalan original, brother and sister Tyler and Becca, are forced to stay with grandparents they’ve never met before. During their visit, Tyler and Becca find out their grandparents aren’t who they expected them to be.

Since his release of “After Earth,” this movie is definitely a comeback for Shyamalan and it’s a must-see for all his fans.

4 “Pod”

While the title of the film references the 1978 film, “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” director Mickey Keating wanted the title to misdirect the audience’s expectations.

This horror movie is basically an intervention gone wrong. Siblings Lyla and Ed go to their family’s lake house to stage an intervention for their brother, Martin. Their brother happens to be a dishonorably discharged veteran who is convinced the military experimented on him. They soon realize, though, that his delusions aren’t too far-fetched.

This film is actually reminiscent of 1960s and ’70s horror films. If you’re an old movie fanatic, this 2015 horror movie might be just for you.

5 “Spring”

Romance isn’t always rainbows and flowers. It can be a terrifying mess sometimes.

This romantic sci-fi movie tells the story of a man named Evan who moves to Italy after the death of his mother. While in Italy, he meets a woman named Louise who isn’t exactly who she says she is. When Evan finds out about Louise’s secret – well, that’s when the fun begins.

Overall, 2015 brought on a revival of amazing horror movies. Honestly, 2017’s “Get Out” was just two years late. It belongs in 2015, too.
