Her musical film “La La Land” leads the nominations for the awards show, with 12 nods. She stars in the Damien Chazelle-directed picture as aspiring actress Mia, who falls for jazz-club owner Sebastian (Ryan Gosling). The film is getting rave reviews, with Tom Hanks gushing after a screening, “If the audience doesn’t go and embrace something as wonderful as this, then we are all doomed.”

Stone is nominated for Best Actress for her role in the film. She was previously nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the awards in 2015 for her role in “Birdman,” and took home the award for Best Acting Ensemble in 2012 for “The Help.”

2 Naomie Harris

She has played James Bond’s right-hand woman, a sea goddess and the wife of Nelson Mandela. Prior to appearing in “Moonlight” –which tells the story of a young man’s journey to self-discover – Harris asserted she “drew the line at crack addiction.”

However, writer/director Barry Jenkins convinced Harris to portray addict Paula in his well-reviewed picture “Moonlight.” And Harris admitted that she had at first judged the role too harshly, telling IndieWire, “I thought she was a bad mother. I thought, ‘How can she be a good mother, she’s a crackhead?’ But actually she is doing the very best that she can with the resources that she has.”

“Moonlight” has received critical acclaim since its festival debut, and boasts 10 nominations at the Critics’ Choice Awards, including Harris’ nod for Best Supporting Actress.

3 Hailee Steinfeld

Steinfeld burst onto the scene in 2010, immediately gaining acclaim for her role in “True Grit,” which earned her an Oscar nod. She has since released album “Haiz,” and worked on more mainstream projects such as “Pitch Perfect 2” and the upcoming “Pitch Perfect 3” as well Taylor Swift’s award-winning music video for “Bad Blood.”

She returned to her indie roots with Kelly Fremon Craig’s touching dramedy “The Edge of Seventeen,” starring as angsty teen Nadine. In the picture, she struggles to deal with high school drama amid processing the loss of a loved one.

For her work in the star-studded picture, Steinfeld is nominated for Best Young Actor/Actress and Best Actress in a Comedy.

She will reprise her role of Wonder Woman in a standalone film due out in 2017, to be followed by roles in “Justice League” and “Justice League Part Two.” Tonight Gadot is nominated for Best Actress in an Action Movie.
