You’ve sang along to their 1999 hit, “Californication,” and embraced your dark side with their new song, “Dark Necessities.” You might even be one of the countless fans buying tickets for what is rumored to be their biggest tour yet, coming to the US and Canada in 2017. While you’re waiting for the Red Hot Chili Peppers to spice up an area near you, though, why not throw it back to four of their most memorable moments so far?
For any fans who saw the Chili Peppers’ performance at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California, this may bring back some very entertaining memories. According to Paul Wolfle from Axs.com, Anthony Kiedis rocked some dyed hair instead of a shirt while John Frusciante proved that his fingers were elegant gymnasts on the guitar. And if you need a little music to get you into the reminiscent mood, this concert featured songs like “Give it Away,” “Under the Bridge” and “Around the World.”
You might think of Californication as a local anthem, but the 60,000 attendees of Denver’s Firefly Festival jammed to the tune just as hard as their west coast counterparts. During the 2013 concert, fans enjoyed a forest view, warm weather and songs ranging from “Meet Me at the Corner” to “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie.” One particular highlight? The Chili Peppers’ own version Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground.” In Paul Wolfle’s opinion, this is one of the band’s best concerts to date.
Even the Chili Peppers have their off days… and the 2014 Super Bowl with Bruno Mars was one of those. According to several tweets, the band’s guitars were noticeably “plugged into NOTHING” and missing the wireless packs needed for a cord-free performance. While some fans argued that pre-recorded performances are normal for high-stakes events like the Super Bowl, most admitted that the missing cords and packs ruined the “illusion” of a live show.
As part of Lollapalooza’s 25th anniversary earlier this year, the Chili Peppers gave a performance that highlighted all of their career hits. Whether the crowd was craving staples like “Scar Tissue” and “Otherside,” or wanted a taste of their funkier songs like “Blood Sugar Sex Magik,” everyone left the hour-and-a-half show feeling satisfied. Everyone was welcome too; EW.com reports that the fans varied from millennials to members of Generation X. The band also showed that they haven’t lost energetic spirit in the nearly 25 years they’ve been playing. Between sprinting or jumping on stage and Flea’s handstand crawl during their encore, the Chili Peppers are as spicy as ever!
