Why is this grouchy squid so relatable?
You may know Squidward as the grumpy sea creature that’s always ready to complain on “SpongeBob Squarepants.” However, it’s possible that Squidward isn’t really depressed. Maybe he’s just struggling to adult.
That grouchy Squid you shook your head at as a child is now actually pretty relatable. Your soul understands him.
Need proof? Here are some reasons Squidward is every young adult’s spirit animal.
When you wake up early on Monday to start the grind and you’re already exhausted. No amount of sleep ever seems to be enough. You long for those days in Kindergarten when naps were an actual requirement.
If you’re overworked and yawning the day away wishing you were in bed you may be more like Squidward than you think.
It could be working the line at a fast food joint or fetching coffee for snobby executives that don’t appreciate you. Whatever your workplace gripes may be, Squidward gets it.
He’s dragging himself in every day to do mindless work he isn’t passionate about. He’s over the day before it even begins and wants to be anywhere else. Does that sound familiar?
If you’re ever felt frustrated and lonely in the throes of single-dom, say Hell. Yeah.
While being single can be liberating and empowering, the process of getting to that place is not a one-way street. It is easy to get caught up in fears and sadness of being alone. While it’s a completely normal and natural feeling, it still totally sucks. Squidward understands this feeling all too well.
Granted, you may not go around always hating everyone. However, if you say you haven’t ever felt this way, we see right through you.
You’ve having a rough day and nothing seems to be going your way. You’re running late to work in the morning, you miss all the green lights and when you get there, you realize you forgot something. When everything feels out of whack and stressful, then everything and everyone becomes annoying.
Despite your sour mood, you have no choice but to suck it up and smile for the customers. Squidward doesn’t do that though because he’s, well, Squidward.
You’re going through life day-to-day and you’re craving some inspiration. You have abilities that go beyond what you must do around the house or for your job. You want your capabilities to be recognized and, more importantly, utilized.
If you feel like your talents are being wasted on doing things you don’t actually care about, you’ve got a case of the Squidward Blues.
When we see someone seemingly more put-together, beautiful or successful than us, it’s difficult to not take it to heart.
Squidward is no exception to this inevitable reality of being a human – or a squid, in this case. We look doe-eyed at people we think are doing better than us and tend to forget how great we already are.
While you may not curl up into the fetal position like Squidward, it’s normal to feel stressed about the future. Everyone gets a little scared when it comes to the unknown and what could happen. It’s difficult to wrap your mind around what the future holds, and that can be overwhelming.
It’s hard enough to function on a day-to-day basis. Dwelling on the stresses of tomorrow only makes that time bomb in your brain tick that much faster.
Though Squidward may not be the most lovable SpongeBob character, he is definitely the realest. He reminds us that it is okay to not be perfect or happy all the time. Oh, sweet relief!
