Alicia Keys continues to show her fans that beauty is more than just skin deep.
The 30-year-old singer made headlines when she announced on Lenny Letter that she would be living life makeup free. Because of this bold decision to abandon concealer, liner and gloss, Keys continues to be an inspiration for many women.
For this “Voice” judge, going barefaced is more about personal liberation, inner growth and overall health than it is about her skin. And since making her decision, Keys’ raw beauty has been infectious.
Her secrets? Here are the five ways Alicia Keys has defined beauty.

When Alicia Keys made the public decision to live life barefaced, she made it very clear that she wasn’t against makeup. Instead, choosing the no makeup lifestyle was about her personal and emotional growth.
Keys was tired of the impossible beauty standards so she chose to, as she wrote in her Lenny Letter, “tear down the walls I built over all the years to be full of purpose and to by myself.”
Despite some of the negative criticisms Keys has received for her “perfect” skin as a celebrity, Dotti, the singer’s makeup artist and friend, revealed to W that Keys is human too. Her skin needs help just like everyone else and her go-to care methods are facials, ice and oils.
Dotti uses Pure Jojoba oil to help with Keys’ complexion and ice to tighten her skin. “I stick a jade roller in ice so it’s basically freezing when I roll it over her skin,” Dotti shared. “I work into all those areas where I want blood and water and energy brought to the surface. It brings her skin to life.”
Keys’ glowing skin comes from how well she takes care of her body. Alicia Keys is a big fan of acupuncture, exercise and healthy eating, Dotti told Into the Gloss.
“Alicia isn’t raw or vegan or anything, but she looks after her diet and eats in a very balanced way, which a lot of people do when you’ve got a lot on your plate to deal with,” Dotti said. “What goes into your body helps your mind and your sprit.”
For Alicia, beauty is more about how a woman carries herself than it is about her physical features. “I would like to see women celebrated for their intelligence,” Keys told Elle in an interview. “It’s very much where our beauty stems from and that’s really important.”
Because of this, Keys has made 2016 about “focusing on a deeper knowing of [herself].”
Spiritual and psychological clarity is incredibly important to Alicia Keys. From practicing forgiveness to meditating, the singer spends a great deal of time focusing on her inner peace.
Alicia Keys works closely with Guru Jagat at her RA MA Institute in Venice, California to renew her body and perspective. According to Guru Jagat’s interview with ET, the breaths, postures and meditations associated with Kundalini Yoga “keep the skin glowing and keep the body in a vital place.” Kundalini Yoga helps stimulate the pituitary gland, the pineal gland and the hypothalamus, which according to Guru Jagat, are “solely responsible for the way you age.”
And as Dotti has previously said, meditating is a big part of Keys’ lifestyle and one of her beauty secrets. “She knows you have to invest internally for your skin to look great externally,” Dotti told W. “It’s about how you process your energy. She comes from a very strong place and she comes from a very kind place.”
