It seems, though, that she is none of those. America Ferrera is known for her various roles in TV and film. However, there’s so much more to her than what we see on TV.
Here are five facts to know about America Ferrera.
America was born in Los Angeles, California in April of 1984. She is the youngest of six children. Her parents emigrated from Honduras in the 70s. After her parents divorced she was raised by her mom. Although her dad went back to Honduras after the divorce, she stayed in Los Angeles.
She attended school in the San Fernando Valley. During this time in her childhood was when she realized she had a passion for acting. She acted in community theaters all throughout L.A.
America began acting at a young age. Community theater was where she got her start, but definitely not where she will be ending. Her first credit is as Ana Garcia on “Real Women Have Curves” and from then she hasn’t stopped acting.
America has appeared in both television and film. Some of her most iconic roles include Betty Suarez on “Ugly Betty,” Carmen in “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” and the voice of Astrid in “How to Train Your Dragon.”
For her role as Betty Suarez on “Ugly Betty” she won a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild award, and she was the first Latin actress to win an Emmy in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category.
After high school, America went on to pursue a college education at the University of Southern California. However, during her time at USC she was cast in the role of Betty Suarez. She left USC, but then returned to graduate.
It took her 10 years, but she did it! America double majored in Theatre and International Relations. When she was younger, her mother stressed the importance of education, so congratulations to America for getting her degrees. In addition, America ended up graduating in 2013.
Sorry, ladies and gentlemen, but America Ferrera is a married woman. She is married to Ryan Piers Williams. Ryan is an actor, director and writer from El Paso, Texas. They got engaged in 2010 and were married in 2011. He is known for his role in “Ocean’s Twelve” and “Muertas,” which is a short film.
America Ferrera has been someone to use her platform to speak out on topics that matter. In January, she spoke at the Women’s March about how difficult it was to be a woman and immigrant during the election process.
She explained that neither the president nor his cabinet are America. We, the people, are America. America is one of the co-founders, alongside her husband and Wilmer Valderrama, of Harness. Harness aims to connect people through conversation, while trying to inspire action and a change in power.
America is more than just an actress.
