Austin Butler is known on television to be young Carrie Bradshaw’s love interest and in real-life, Vannessa Hudgens’ man. But what sets Austin Butler apart from the rest of the “every teen’s fantasy” type of actor?

Here are five things to know about this young actor.

1 Austin Butler is a California Kid.

Austin Butler, born Austin Robert Butler, grew up in Anaheim, California and has always enjoyed movies.

He was discovered at the Orange County Fair by a management company who helped him break out into the entertainment industry. From there, Butler went into full-blown acting boot camp by doing what most actors do: going to acting classes.

Austin Butler went on to have roles in “Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide,” “Zoey 101” and “Hannah Montana.” Also for some strange reason, he always seems to take off his shirt for his roles. Even the kid shows. We wonder why…

“Yeah, I played violin that was the first instrument. I was a kid – I was like nine [or] something. Then I transferred that over and started playing the guitar a lot and I would play so much that my fingers would bleed and I would Superglue them,” he said.

3 He was brought to tears by Vanessa Hudgens’ “Grease Live” performance.

Hours before “Grease Live,” Vanessa Hudgens’ father died of Stage 4 cancer. She took to Twitter to say thank you to all of her fans and went on to perform the show in her father’s honor.

Butler was so moved by the performance that he took to Twitter to compliment Hudgens on her fantastic rendition as bad-girl Rizzo.

He wrote, “WOW @VanessaHudgens singing ‘Worst Things’ had me in tears. Just brilliant #GreaseLive.”

The couple has been dating since 2011.

4 He took to Twitter to speak about his mother’s passing.

In 2014, Lori Butler, mother of Austin Butler, unfortunately, passed away. The cause of death was not released. Austin Butler took to social media to honor the memory of his mother.

“Lori Butler, my mom, my hero [and] my best friend passed away this morning. Lets all celebrate her. I love you and will miss you every day Mom,” he wrote.

5 He now has a positive outlook on life because of his battle with depression.

Butler posts many inspirational quotes on his Instagram and says he tries to express gratitude every day because of his earlier struggle with depression.

“I went through a period when I was rebellious and a mess of a person. I’d swing from happy to depressed, and I realized the patterns of my mental state were contingent on the feelings I was allowing in my head,” he told Cosmopolitan. “Depression and anxiety can’t fit in your head if you’re cultivating feelings of joy and inspiration. So now every morning, I go for a walk and list all the things I’m grateful for. It makes me so happy.”
