If you have seen numerous blackheads being extracted on Instagram, you have probably stumbled upon Dr. Pimple Popper. And although watching pus-filled pimples being popped doesn’t seem like the most pleasing thing to watch online, Dr. Pimple Popper, or Sandra Lee’s, 2.5 million fans would probably say otherwise.

Sandra Lee is a board certified dermatologist that has raked in a good amount of views by sharing videos of her operations.

1 Dr. Pimple Popper came from immigrant parents.

Although Sandra Lee was born in America, her parents traveled from different parts of Asia to Flushing, New York.

“My dad and mom came to America (Queens, NY) via Singapore and Malaysia the year before I was born so that my dad could complete his dermatology residency in New York – yes, my dad is a dermatologist too, now retired,” she told 8Asians. “I’m Chinese, but my dad’s from Singapore and my mother from Malaysia.”

Then after being born in Flushing, her family moved to Southern California when she was about five years old. So for the most part, she’s always been a California girl.

2 She never realized she would get this big.

Lee honestly can say she never thought her pimple popping videos would actually gain as much fame as she’s garnered. When Lee saw on Reddit that people had an obsession with watching pimples, she decided to cater to it.

However, Lee did share with L.A. Confidential that she didn’t fall in love with pimple popping until she was older.

“I call myself a born-again popaholic,” she said. “My father’s a dermatologist, so I definitely knew about skin and we had textbooks sitting around the house. I have visions of photos burned into my memory that I would see around the house. It was really kind of normal.”

3 She created her YouTube channel for more than just pimple popping.

In an interview with Barcroft, Sandra Lee explains that although she loves satisfying people’s closeted desire to watch pimples being popped, she also did it for a different reason. Lee wanted people to have an up-close look at what dermatology was all about.

“I feel like I have really brought this sort of thing out of the closet in a way. Previously people were hiding in their rooms, at their computer sweating and worried that someone was going to come in and catch them looking at pimple porn,” she said. “I want to use the notoriety I’ve gained from pimple popping and really use it to showcase dermatology. I want the audience to really learn about what’s on their skin and how to treat acne, melasma, eczema and beyond.”

4 Dr.Pimple Popper has expanded because of her YouTube account.

Even though she has made famous appearances on television, Dr. Pimple Popper has actually gained more clients through her YouTube Channel. She shared with Forbes that her exposure and business has mainly come from social media.

“I’ve done some TV stuff for the last five years and some of the shows will go all around the world, and certainly all around the country. I don’t get approached for those appearances. I get approached for Dr. Pimple Popper all the time,” she said.

She then added that “popping” has become a phenomenon among younger generations. She’s definitely right.

5 Dr. Pimple Popper has a skin-care line.

Just in case you couldn’t get enough of Dr. Pimple Popper, you can actually take your love a step further by using her skin care line. Her reason for creating her own skin care products is noble and is for more than just making money.

She shared with Mental Floss, “This is really for people who can’t see a dermatologist or don’t have the time [or] their parents won’t take them. They don’t have insurance for it. These are products that I, myself, would give to my own patients. In a way, my videos work with this, too, because I want to teach people why some of these products work and what they work on specifically.”

Thank you, Dr. Pimple Popper, for not only giving a community to a pimple-popping lovers but also educating us on skin care.
