When you were a young girl, the storybook characters you grew up with were often portrayed as damsels in distress. Snow White and Sleeping Beauty waited for their knights clad in steel armor to rescue them with “true love’s kiss.” However, although the ABC original “Once Upon a Time” retells stories of “true love,” it has also recreated many of these women as more powerful, dynamic role models.

The newest addition to the ABC cast is Karen David, who now plays Princess Jasmine. But prior to this character, David’s most high profile position in Hollywood was her role as Princess Isabella, the spunky royal figure on ABC’s “Galavant.” As Princess Isabella, David’s job was to seek out Prince Galavant in order to save her kingdom from King Richard. But now, this actress has taken on a new role as the elegant and independent Disney heroine, Jasmine.

David is the latest in a string of Brits to join the show, including Robert Carlyle as Mr Gold and Rebecca Mader as Zelena. Karen David made her debut in the Hollywood scene about three years ago and was immediately recognized by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in Los Angeles (BAFTA LA) as one of the brightest emerging British acting talents. She joined their Newcomers Program, which supports UK talents and helps them expand their careers in the U.S.

Aside from acting, Karen David and is also a talented singer and performer. Before singing on “Galavant,” which was also a musical comedy fantasy series, she signed a record deal with BMG Europe. She sang the 2003 single, “It’s Me,” which became a Top Ten hit in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. With this musical background, “Once Upon a Time” fans were thrilled to hear David’s snippet of the Disney classic, “A Whole New World.”

Karen David joins other stars on the Sunday night ABC series, such as Ginnifer Goodwin (Snow White) and Lana Parrilla (Regina Mills), who work to inspire young women to be beautiful, powerful and self-reliant.
