It's totally fine to have a mimosa while you meal prep.
Exercising is one of the best ways to relieve stress, alleviate anxiety, and reduce depression. However, it’s just as important for your mental health to be in great shape too. But, how can you incorporate mental health into your physical health journey? Learn from Kelsey Hill.
Kelsey Hill is using her Instagram platform to teach her followers about the importance of incorporating mental health into your physical fitness routine. More people are deciding to trade their love-handles for dumbbells and that’s great. But, they don’t think about the one thing that fuels those actions: the brain.
Kelsey Hill is a 21-year-old Instagram fitness influencer who started her fitness blog in August of 2017. With over 136k followers, Hill has racked up quite the reputation for knowing her stuff when it comes to fitness. After graduating with a Psychology degree and working at a retail job that she hated (relatable much?) she decided to embark on a journey to pursue her true passion: health.
Hill is now a full-time Beachbody on Demand (BOD) coach with over 350 coaches learning under her management. She recently won a prestigious award for being a top coach at a BOD conference in Indianapolis, IN.
As a fitness coach, Hill emphasizes the importance of pushing yourself in your workouts to achieve your physical goals. But, she also emphasizes the value of rest days and self-care. Starting a fitness journey can be empowering and if done the right way, it can totally transform your life. But for many, their journeys get muddled with diets that don’t work and over-the-top challenges that put way too much stress on the body.
Hill is extremely active on her Instagram and posts most of her life on the daily. Some days she shares high-intensity workout videos but others are of her stretching, wearing face masks, hanging out with her boyfriend and pups, or shopping at Target. Recently, she has shifted to documenting a new type of journey – her pregnancy.
She does this to show that you don’t need to kill yourself in the gym every day to change your body. Hill shares that taking the time to allow your body to recover is vital in maintaining a positive outlook on exercising and can prevent burnout. Having good mental health is about creating a mindset that doesn’t view exercise as a form of punishment, which many people unfortunately do.
I want to have rock hard abs as much as the next girl but I’m not willing to sacrifice my mental health to do it. Hill is great at combining the value of physical and mental health. She doesn’t work out when she feels her body is hurting and gives herself a day or two to rest and recover. If we all had that mindset, maybe more of us would follow through with our fitness routines.
Hill doesn’t advocate for strict diets or crazy workout regimens. So many people give up during their journey because they feel exhausted all the time from extreme workouts and are practically starving themselves due to stringent food rules.
Eating the right nutrients to fuel your body is key to any fitness journey. That doesn’t mean you have to quit the margs or ditch the salsa. Hill teaches about moderation and indulging in your favorite foods every so often because that’s life. She wants her followers and clients to lead healthy lifestyles that are maintainable, not restrictive, and miserable.
Hill has also touched on how we often compare ourselves to the fit people we see on our timelines. Comparison is the thief of joy and can make anyone want to crawl in a hole and hide. We think, “Wow my arms are so flabby compared to hers” or “My butt is definitely not that plump.”
But Hill counters those thoughts and says, “We all have imperfections but those imperfections just make you & your body perfect in its own way.” She mentions that we need to be proud and thankful to our bodies for getting us through the day, no matter what our days look like.
“Learning to bet on me was the best decision I ever made.” -Kelsey Hill via @khill_fit
Being healthy shouldn’t put your mental health at risk. Hill does a great job at balancing her physical and mental health and teaches others how to do the same. She takes the time to talk about the hard stuff like bad workouts, over-working yourself, and unhealthy eating. But, she turns around and describes the best ways to pick yourself up after a bad day. If we all use her mentality when it comes to fitness, we’d all not only look better but feel better too.
