ENTITY shares Modern Family castPhoto via Instagram / @katyuu_

The “Modern Family” cast is a total mess most of the time, especially the heart of the cast: The Dunphy’s.

But whether or not it pains you to watch them, each character has qualities that make them really relatable and easy to love.

Need convincing? Well, allow ENTITY to break down the highlights and the not-so-great parts of each Dunphy family member’s personality.

Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen)

Claire Dunphy is bossy. She struggles with feeling inadequate and often gets jealous of her father’s wife, Gloria (Sofia Vergara). And when she meddles into her kids’ problems to be the hero, she often gets painted as the villain.

But…

She also loves her family and is their biggest supporter. This mom is a strong matriarch. Claire keeps everyone organized – by the end of the episode, anyway. And on top of that, she is willing to put her own needs aside to help out whenever her family is in a pickle.

Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell)

Phil Dunphy is aloof. He tries “peerenting” instead of “parenting,” which often backfires on his goal of being a “cool dad.” Phil’s also pretty clumsy and doesn’t take direction very well. And he totally cannot help himself from flirting with Gloria.

But…

He is extremely devoted to his family. Phil shows that being a father isn’t just about being the man responsible for creating his kids. He is hands-on and even when his efforts fail, the important part is that he is interested in his kids’ lives. He is present and he tries.

The “Modern Family” cast often looks to the self-proclaimed “cool dad” for advice.

Haley Dunphy (Sarah Hyland)

Haley Dunphy is self-absorbed. She parties and is known for being the beauty without the brains. While she may be popular, her career goals are often non-existent and she gets marked as a failure. Like your stereotypical rebellious teen, Haley is irresponsible and, of course, carefree about it.

But…

She can surprise everyone with unanticipated moments of clarity and wisdom. And even if she can never see eye to eye with Alex on fashion and pop culture, Haley shows she has a big soft spot for her little sister. When Alex goes to college, Haley is the one who reacted the strongest. Hayley hugs her sister and tells Alex that she will be her “own personal cheerleader.”

Alex Dunphy (Ariel Winter)

Alex Dunphy is sarcastic. She is the stereotypical middle child who feels like no one understands her. This character is also condescending and often picks on her older sister for being ditzy. Plus, being an overachiever makes her standoffish and impatient.

But…

She is super intelligent and driven. Alex is self-reliant and often picks up the slack when her siblings or parents have their heads in the clouds. She also has unexpected emotional moments where she realizes she needs her family’s love as much as they need her brain.

Luke Dunphy (Nolan Gould)

Luke Dunphy is immature. He takes after his father, and by that we mean he isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. In his younger years, Luke was mischievous and often found himself in trouble with Gloria’s son, Manny (Rico Rodriguez). He gets easily distracted and marches to the beat of his own drum.

But…

He has an innocence that is charming and likable. He rarely fights with his sisters. Luke respects his mother as the leader of the family and looks to her for advice on more serious issues. And, like his father, Luke attempts to make his family happy by always aiming to put a smile on their faces.

Our favorite part about all this?

Regardless of all the hilarious drama the “Modern Family” cast experiences together, they always hug it out and become stronger as a family by the end of each episode.
