There haven’t been enough movies or TV shows that highlight Leap Day. But thankfully, shows like “30 Rock” and “Modern Family” have done Leap Day episodes.

But what happened in the “Modern Family” Leap Day episode that makes it such a special holiday?

Let us jog your memory.

“Modern Family” Leap Day Episode

There were two main storylines in this episode that revolved around Leap Day, which lands on February 29th. And this modern family sure doesn’t mess around when it comes to this holiday.

The episode started off with almost every character saying how much they love Leap Day. The Dunphys sure are huge fans of this holiday since Phil declares that it is “Leap Day, not Sleep Day.”

But not only is it Leap Day, it’s also Cameron’s birthday!

I mean the odds of having a Leap Day birthday are quite slim, but Cam is an exception, which makes him even more excited about this special holiday.

It’s Cameron’s Birthday

Since Leap Day only comes once every four years, this technically makes it Cam’s “tenth” birthday. So throughout the episode, Mitchell tries to throw him the biggest and best birthday party of all time.

However, Mitchell completely missed the point that Cam is trying to embrace: this is his 10th birthday because he wasn’t ready to face the big 4-0.

Mitchell plans a “Wizard of Oz” themed party for Cam, but realizes it’s not what he wanted. So Mitchell decides to throw a last minute birthday cruise for Cam and invites Jay’s family and the Dunphy family.

When Cam becomes angry at Mitchell for not being able to throw him a decent 10th birthday, Mitchell figured out why he’s been so upset. It was the fact that Cam is 40, but wanted to do something to feel like he was actually 10.

Phil’s Love for Leap Day

Phil’s excitement for Leap Day, on the other hand, was a more about the idea of having an extra day to live life to the fullest every four years.

Because Phil feels the need to do something special on a holiday that only happens once every four years, he arranges a trip for the entire family to learn how to trapeze at the Santa Monica pier.

But things don’t go according to plans.

Apparently the Dunphy women have synchronized their menstrual cycles – or like Luke called it, they’re “monsterating.” Phil makes a plan with Luke and Manny to ditch the girls and still go on the trip.

Leap Day seems to be ruined for Phil when the girls find out about his secret plan.

But towards the end of the “Modern Family” Leap Day episode, Phil mentions to Claire that it has been an emotional day for him because he couldn’t do what he wanted.

Overall, everything worked out in the “Modern Family” Leap Day episode, making it a not so bad Leap Day and one funny episode! Which part was your favorite? Comment below or tweet us at @entity_mag.
