Fans have been dying for a glimpse at the highly anticipated Netflix adaptation of “A Series of Unfortunate Events” since plans were announced two years ago. And the latest trailer finally reveals Neil Patrick Harris as iconic villain Count Olaf.

“He said specifically he was waiting very eagerly to get his hands on you,” the three Baudelaire children are told, as the clip kicks off with a hint at Count Olaf’s dastardly plan.

The one-minute trailer builds up to the long-awaited reveal, with fans coming closer and closer to a look at the devilish man himself as it progresses. All the while, voice-overs label him a “vile, terrible person,” a “thief and a murderer,” a “villain,” and a “wretch” as well as “horrible” and “awful.”

But of course, it’s of no consequence to Count Olaf, as he plans to live up to his terrible reputation. “You haven’t the faintest idea,” he threatens, as he finally walks into the light.

The Baudelaire orphans are on alert from the beginning, with middle child Klaus (Louis Hynes) sounding the alarm over the “strange” happenings to his siblings. “He’s in disguise and he’s trying to take us away,” he could be heard shouting in one scene as the Count lingered menacingly in the dark.

Leading up to the unveiling, Count Olaf is pictured plotting, spying on the children, and yanking flowers out of a decorative pot, among other despicable things. But of course the best moment of all comes when Harris, unrecognizable in costume, finally steps into focus. At that moment, fans will likely feel the teaser has been well worth the wait.

Fans of the popular book series – as well as the 2004 movie starring Jim Carrey – know that the trouble begins as the three children are left with the devious Count after losing their parents in a fire.

And as the title suggests, the children are only met with more hardship from there, as the Count gives his very best effort at stealing their inheritance. The 2004 film followed the first three books, while Harris recently revealed on the September 16 episode of “Live with Kelly!” that the Netflix series plans to tackle two books per episode.

There are 13 books total in the wildly successful series, for which more than 65 million copies have been sold. So it’s no surprise that there has been quite the excitement building in anticipation of the latest adaptation.

Netflix’s “A Series of Unfortunate Events” will debut on the streaming service on Friday, January 13.
