Sixteen-year old Laurie Hernandez, our “national treasure” (as Val Chmerkovskiy says), came home from the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio with a silver and gold medal in women’s artistic gymnastics. As NBC Olympics writes, “Hernandez was at her best at the 2016 Olympic Trials, showing no signs of struggling with the immense pressure on her shoulders.”

Aside from last night’s small stumble, the Olympian seems to also be performing at her best on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.” For the first three weeks of the competition, she has ranked at the top of the leaderboard, scoring a perfect score after performing Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel.”

Earlier in the season, when “DWTS” host Tom Bergeron asked her if she got pre-show jitters, Hernandez simply replied, “At the Olympics I trained 11 years for it, and so here is kind of the congratulations jog after it.”

To find out how Hernandez and Chmerkovskiy’s stay composed and competitive, Ellen DeGeneres interviewed the dance partners about their dance styles and strategies. In the video above, Chmerkovskiy shares the advice he regularly gives Hernandez about how “it’s not so much about execution, but how you make people feel.” However, since Hernandez admits she sleeps with a teddy bear at night and has never had a boyfriend, she’s had to get emotional inspiration from movies like “The Notebook” and “Finding Dory.”

Watch above to learn Laurie Hernandez’s secrets and why “The Notebook,” Dory and imagining a quesadilla help her dance!
