Entity reports on the budding relationship between Meghan Markle and Price Harry.

After rarely talking about his private life, Prince Harry has gone public about his new girlfriend, American actress Meghan Markle, and warned the press to back off her.

In a bid to protect the “Suits” star from salacious coverage, some of which appears to carry an undercurrent of racism and sexism, he has taken the rare step of authorizing the release of a statement from Kensington Palace.

“Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her,” the statement says. “It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm.”

Since rumors of the budding relationship surfaced last week, the media’s excitement (and disdain) has been palpable. Meghan Markle, best known for her role as Rachel Zane in the legal drama “Suits,” is also the founder of the lifestyle website The Tig, a global ambassador for World Vision Canada and an advocate for United Nations Women. However, much of the media seems to be most interested in her heritage as a mixed-race African American and her background as a “saucy divorcee.”

Although Meghan Markle has gone on record in a 2015 Elle article, saying that she takes “pride in being a strong, confident mixed-race woman,” the media seems to be testing her statement.

The Daily Mail, for instance, published an article comparing Markle’s “tatty” Los Angeles neighborhood to Prince Harry’s Kensington home, describing her as “Harry’s girl” who is “almost straight outta Compton.” And as the statement describes, her mother has had to struggle past photographers to get to her front door, reporters have tried to illegally enter Markle’s home and numerous publications have offered “substantial bribes” to Markle’s ex-boyfriends.

“He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game,’” the statement says. “This is not a game – it is her life and his.”

In turn, Prince Harry asked that the statement be used to thwart the press from their private lives and to “pause and reflect before any further damage is done.”
