Melanie Martinez is a “Cry Baby” – but that’s no insult to her. The 21-year-old singer has become well known for her overtly adolescent persona and now she is trending with her latest hit, “Pacify Her.”

In the music video she plays a pigtail-clad child – fitting for the song’s title. The look is odd but unsurprising. Her other videos, including “Tag, You’re It/Milk and Cookies,” all feature the same distinct image.

Her eccentric persona doesn’t stop at music, however. Martinez recently announced her new fragrance, “Cry Baby Perfume Milk,” in an arguably creepy commercial. While this perfume won’t smell like dairy, the fragrance container is shaped like a child’s bottle.

The muse behind the bizarre image? Herself. The singer-songwriter’s eccentric videos are an extension of her own style and life philosophy. Her two-toned, Cruella de Vil hair paired with the pink, baby-eque attire is not an act restricted to her performer persona. She carries the “Cry Baby” theme into her personal life to deeply embody the character she plays.

“Cry Baby is just so close to my heart in a way that I feel so connected to the character, or like I am the character,” Martinez told Vogue. “The second album is about the town that Cry Baby lives in. It’s about her experience in this place from beginning to end, and it’s also introducing other characters in that place.”

Although her act is hard for some to accept, she has a die-hard following. Currently, “The Voice star” is on a world tour with her first full-length album.
