The funniest STEM queen on the internet.
Simone Giertz just came out of her brain tumor surgery, and at the moment it seems like everything went pretty well. Fans and others she’s inspired anxiously wait for an update to see whether or not the entirety of the tumor was removed and how Giertz is recovering.
Giertz is more than a woman with Youtube channel. She’s a leading influencer for women in STEM fields and an all-around media star. Here are seven super cool facts to know about Simone Giertz as we hope for her total and speedy recovery.
To be specific, Simone Giertz’s channel has 1,173,417 subscribers. It’s on this channel that she made all of her “shitty robots” that have brought her to fame.
If you pick any robot video on Giertz’s channel you will see the funniest displays of engineering fails that have graced the internet. From alarm clocks that slaps you awake to a Westworld robot of herself, she’s got a ton of weird crap that makes STEM fun again. Part of why her videos are so popular is that Simone Giertz isn’t a boring old man that you can’t follow if you aren’t a physics major. She just throws shit together to make us laugh, while still giving me a little familiarity with the world of robots.
Simone Giertz is from Stockholm, and thus speaks fluent Swedish which you can see in her very first Youtube video. She studied physics for a year at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, a leading engineering school in Europe. For a while, she was living on a super cool houseboat named Alfred, but she sold it in 2017.
Yup, a few months ago, Simone Giertz did a TED Talk exploring not only her own origin story, her struggle with performance anxiety, and (as the video is named) why you should build useless machines. It’s funny, inspirational, and smart, which is all very Simone.
The Shorty Awards are the self-proclaimed Oscars of social media. She was nominated in the STEM category with the likes of Adam Savage and Bill Nye the Science Guy, who ended up winning. Simone actually works with Adam Savage on his site Tested.com as a host for various videos. Here’s some of their work together!
If you needed more proof (besides getting into a prestigious European university and teaching herself robotics) Simone Giertz is a bit of genius, consider that she went to China as an exchange student at 16 years old and learned basic Mandarin. Fun fact: she got to use that basic Mandarin when she was cast in an episode of a Chinese sitcom.
Lastly, Simone Giertz found out in April of 2018 that she had a benign brain tumor the size of a golf ball. She announced the diagnosis on her channel through tears and morbid humor. Of course, she received a flood of support and love in her comments. According to her Twitter bio, she’s named her brain tumor Brian. Here’s to hoping she kicks Brian’s ass.
