Sonita Alizadeh is an Afghan rapper who has been vocal against daughters being sold into marriages by their family, an arrangement that Alizadeh’s own parents had set up for her before she came to the United States on a student visa. Although it’s illegal for Iranian women to sing publicly, her video “Brides for Sale” that gained a lot of international interest and became her means of escape. She currently lives in Utah and continues to write songs
