Emma Watson was appointed UN Women Goodwill Ambassador in July 2014 and has since been involved in promoting women’s education and gender equality. In September 2014, the inspirational woman gave a widely hailed UN speech about gender inequality and invited men to join the fight to make gender equality “their issue too.” With that, she launched the “HeForShe” campaign that asks men to “take action against all forms of violence and discrimination faced by women and girls.”

Two years later, the celebrity delivers another UN speech, but this time she directs her message to universities and how they should be creating safe spaces for women to grow, learn and thrive. “The university experience must tell women that their brain power is valued [and] that they belong within the leadership of the university itself,” Watson says.

Not only that, but because 45 percent of women don’t feel safe walking alone at night, Watson also advocates for women’s rights to safety. She argues, “And so importantly right now, the experience must make it clear that the safety of women, minorities and anyone who may be vulnerable is a right and not a privilege.”

Watch the rest of the video to hear Emma Watson tell you about her university experience, how this experience has shaped her life and why women around the world would benefit from such a positive education.
