Ashlee Simpson is known for her singing and acting, but there’s more to know about this Simpson sister.
For example, her birth name is spelled, Ashley, and she was the youngest person to ever be admitted to the School of American Ballet in New York City at the age of 11.
Intrigued, yet? Here are five important facts you need to know about this “7th Heaven” star.
Ashlee Simpson’s music was far from Jessica Simpson’s upbeat country music. Ashlee had a more edgy, pop-punk style.
Simpson’s debut single, “Pieces of Me,” dropped in 2004 and topped the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart. She then released her debut album, “Autobiography,” the same year, which made it to the top of the Billboard 200 chart.
She went on to release her second album, “I Am Me,” in 2005, which also hit the top of the Billboard 200 chart and received a platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. Her third studio album, “Bittersweet World,” dropped in 2008 and reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200.
And although she hasn’t made music since 2008, Simpson recently announced that she’s coming back to the music scene with a fourth album.
Last year, she told Us Weekly that her and her husband, Evan Ross, are working on an album together. The two expressed their excitement to work and tour together.
“When you work separately, you don’t get to hang out — so this works out well,” Ross said.
“This way we can tour together! I’m definitely excited. I love working with my husband,” Simpson added.
Now that this Simpson has grown up, her sound will be very different than her “Bittersweet World” album. Simpson and Evan explained their new sound as “soulful, fun and reflective of music that [we] both like.”
Simpson was married to Fallout Boy lead singer Pete Wentz from 2008 to 2011. They announced that they were dating in 2006, got engaged in 2008 and then got married a month after. The couple announced that Simpson was pregnant a couple weeks after their wedding.
Bronx Mowgli Wentz, their first child, was born on Nov. 20, 2008.
Simpson and Wentz, however, got divorced in 2011 over irreconcilable differences. After the divorce, she started dating her current husband, Evan Ross, in 2013 and they got married in 2014. Love was definitely in the air as Simpson gave birth to her daughter, Jagger Snow Ross, on July 30, 2015.
Simpson and Evan explained to Us Weekly that the brother and sister duo, Jagger and Bronx, get along extremely well.
“He is so sweet,” Simpson said. “He is so protective of her and I think that will continue. And we all laugh at her because she’s so funny! He’s honestly so good with her, it’s awesome. We do everything together as a family. The age difference doesn’t matter – she’s excited about anything he’s doing. And the three of us play games and she’s so happy to just hang out and chill with everyone.”
Simpson got her start in acting as a guest star on an episode of “Malcolm in the Middle ” in 2001. She then received a role in “The Hot Chick.” Then in 2002, she scored a major role on “7th Heaven” until 2004.
From 2004 to 2005, she was also given her own show titled, “The Ashlee Simpson Show,” which followed her life and music career.
Outside of that, she landed a gig in the indie film, “Undiscovered,” in 2008 but it was a major flop as it only made $1 million at the box office and received an 8 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
After this, her next acting job didn’t come for another year, when she guest-starred on an episode of “CSI: NY.” She also played a part in “Melrose Place” from 2009 to 2010. However, she hasn’t been in any more acting projects since 2014, after playing the voice of Strelka in “Space Dogs: Adventure to the Moon.”
On Oct. 23, 2004, Ashlee Simpson found herself in the middle of a lip syncing debacle. Simpson was set to perform “Autobiography” during her “Saturday Night Live” performance. However, the vocal track for “Pieces of Me” started playing. But Simpson’s mouth wasn’t moving. She tried to do a little dance to make light of the situation, but ended up walking off stage out of embarrassment. At the end of the show, she’s seen with host Jude Law explaining the situation.
“I feel so bad. My band started playing the wrong song, and I didn’t know what to do so I thought I’d do a hoedown,” she said. She later tried to cover up the mix up by claiming that she was advised to lip sync due to an acid reflux disease.
But after this, Simpson became the “SNL lip-sync girl.” America made fun of her, and her career turned into a joke. Her third album, “Bittersweet World,” sold less than a million copies due to this incident.
