Comic book character Wonder Woman is the new face of the United Nations. As an honorary ambassador, the superhero will be used for social media campaigns.

“The character will be used to promote messages about women’s empowerment and gender-based violence,” the U.N. said via a statement.

Since Woman Woman is a fictional character, DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson will accept the honor on her behalf in a ceremony, according to Washington Post. Female actresses, such as the iconic Lynda Carter, who have portrayed the character in the entertainment world may also attend the event, but their presences are not yet confirmed.

The New York Times reports that the decision has sparked some heated debate, as seven female candidates in the real world recently lost to male diplomat António Guterres for the leadership role of Secretary General.

Prior to U.N.’s Wonder Woman announcement, the fictional character’s possible bisexual identity has been trending in the entertainment world in anticipation of 2017’s film, “Wonder Woman.” Female actress Gal Gadot plays the character in the superhero movie.

In an interview with Variety, Gadot discussed the possibility –  but did not confirm – that the character is bisexual. With Wonder Woman serving as the next ambassador, her sexual identity could serve as an inspiration within the LGBTQ community.

The U.N. will officially give the honor to the comic book character in a New York ceremony on Friday, October 21.
