“Mean Girls” is arguably one of the most quotable comedies of all time, with the most iconic characters of all time. Regina George is the queen bee, Karen Smith is the beautiful airhead and Gretchen Wieners is Toaster Strudel royalty.

And although Gretchen Wieners is a mean girl, she is definitely very relatable. Gretchen Wieners is simply trying to survive the Plastics and the clique culture that comes with high school. And we get that.

So to celebrate her, here are five reasons you may identify with Gretchen Wieners more than you think.

1 She will do anything for her friends.

You can accuse Gretchen Wieners of many things, but not caring about her girls isn’t one of them.

When Cady arrives at Northshore High School, Gretchen Wieners tells her everything she needs to know about being part of the popular girls.  She discloses all the rules – from dress code to girl code about who is and is not okay to date. Rather than being spiteful and letting the new girl sink or swim, Gretchen helps her adjust far more than Regina or Karen.

She helps give Cady a makeover and she jumps at the chance to comfort Regina when she is feeling overwhelmed. Female friendships are a core component of Gretchen’s identity, so she works tirelessly to maintain them.

2 She knows everything about everyone.

Gretchen Wieners is the official confidante of “The Plastics.” Everyone spills their secrets to her and she’s eager to listen. However, her problem is that keeping promises isn’t exactly her forte.

Gretchen Wieners is undeniably the gossip girl of the group. She wants to feel close to everyone in her inner circle and sharing information is her primary method to achieve this. Gretchen may be a great listener, but keeping quiet is not one of her strengths.

Gretchen Wieners holds the key to everyone’s secrets. Regina George tells her about her nose job, cheating on her boyfriend and her parents being on the brink of separation. Sadly, she spills the beans on all of these things. I mean… she tried, right?

3 She struggles with insecurities.

This “Mean Girl” puts on a strong front of confidence, but deep down Gretchen Wieners is unsure of herself.

Gretchen presents herself as confident to the point of being conceited. However, this is far from the case. Gretchen overhears Regina say that people think she doesn’t deserve to be nominated for Homecoming Queen because she isn’t pretty. And in another scene, Gretchen admits that she hates her calves and thinks her hairline is “weird.”

Then, her insecurities are only heightened by the on and off fling she has with fellow North Shore student, Jason. He brushes off her question of why he didn’t call her back and instead hits on one of her closest friends in front of her face. Not to mention, she later finds out that he is dating another girl behind her back.

Gretchen Wieners can come off as vain, but she is just as self-conscious as the rest of us. Honestly, we would believe her if she told us she just wanted to be appreciated for who she is.

4 She just wants to fit in.

While Regina George is mean-spirited and downright ruthless, Gretchen Wieners is simply yearning for acceptance.

She knows the perks that come with being a plastic, and she’s not willing to give it up without a fight. Like many of us, Gretchen Wieners deeply wants to be liked by others.

Her desire to belong is most apparent in her relationship with Regina George. She is regularly insulted by her “friend,” but to maintain that connection, she puts up with it. She accepts the fact that being part of the “in” crowd comes with great sacrifice.

5 She stands her ground.

There’s a reason that “breaking” Gretchen Wieners is key in the plan to take down Regina George. When she starts to feel unappreciated by her bestie, she becomes resentful and completely blows up and essentially boots the queen bee off of the Plastics island.

As mentioned previously, Gretchen Wieners is a loyal friend, but you don’t want to get on her bad side.

Gretchen doesn’t ask for much, she just wants the support of her clique because she deeply cherishes her friendships. But when boundaries are crossed, she knows what she needs to do. If she doesn’t feel important and valued, then all hell is about to break loose.

To sum it up, Gretchen Wieners isn’t the girl next door and she doesn’t lead the pack. She’s just Gretchen.

She is the glue that holds the holds the Plastics together. However, she rarely gets the credit she deserves.
