You’re crying on the bathroom floor as you look around and see little bits of hair that used to belong to your head. A murder didn’t take place, but it certainly feels that way. All you wanted to do was save money!

It’s okay. We totally get it.

Cutting your own hair may be a little intimidating, but it doesn’t have to end up in a disaster. If you really want to save yourself a trip to the salon, here are some helpful tips on how to cut your own hair.

1 How to cut your own hair by taking a walk on the teeny side.

Unless you are a celebrity stylist that has been trained for centuries, you might not want to use sword length scissors to cut your hair.  According to experts, the smaller the better.

“Use something like cuticle scissors or baby nail-trimming shears, with very small blades. You don’t want a professional scissor — that blade is too long to control what you’re doing,” says stylist Donna Williams at Tomahawk Salon in Bushwick.

2 Part the hairy-head seas.

Moses had the right idea when he was trying to reach the promise land.

New York City salon owner and stylist Mark Garrison shared with YouBeauty how to part your hair to reach a promise land-worthy hair cut.

“Section two sides just behind both ears away from a third back section. Then pull one front section in front of the shoulder, twist it, and while keeping it twisted with finger and thumb securing it at the bottom, trim across the ends,” he explained. “Repeat the process on the other side. Then pull both sections down straight to meet in the middle under your face, if the length allows, to see if they’re even. Adjust as needed. Then split the back section in two, comb into the front sections on either side and then trim across so that the back section lines up with the front.”

3 If you want to layer up, you have to go in head first.

Arsen Gurgov from Louis Licari salons went on the “Today Show” to explain that flipping your hair back and forth is the key to getting Sasha Fierce ready.

“Lean your head forward and flip [your] hair, making sure it’s centered on your head. Gather the ends and cut straight across. When you flip your head back over, you’ll maintain the length but add a few flattering layers,” he said.

Hmmm … that might be easier said than done though. But totally worth it if you can look like Queen B.

4 Go for the big chop by cutting your own hair short.

Cutting your hair short can be daunting, but cutting your hair short on your own, is a whole different ball game.

Dayna Evans of The Cut said that she looked to YouTube to learn how to conquer the “big chop.” She also explained that it was hard work, but she powered through and got surprising results.

“I cleaned up some bits and pieces that were too spiky or too blunt or too long, and then I admired my work,” she said. “I have a bob now. And my neck is no longer hot. Those are two wonderful things, but the best part is the knowledge that having cut my own hair, I can continue to do so forever.”

So basically, just go for it. You may even love how it turns out.

But if you’re still a little nervous, just start small. And if you’re satisfied and trust yourself enough, go all the way. You never know, maybe your hair will end up being a cut above the rest.
