Margot Robbie on ENTITY.

“Suicide Squad” may have taken the No. 1 spot as 2016’s most popular movie on IMDb, but it was an even bigger year for the film’s star, Margot Robbie.

Although “Suicide Squad” received its share of negative reviews, the movie was a hit at the box office, making $745 million worldwide after its August release. Much of the attention, however, was on the movie’s captivating star, Margot Robbie, whose performance as Harley Quinn helped skyrocket her career.

Throughout the year, fans have raved about Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn’s babydoll mannerisms and fierce character. In fact, not only did her performance inspire the year’s most popular Halloween costume, it also led to her own spinoff movie “Gotham City Sirens,” which will feature Harley Quinn and other female DC villains.

Prior to “Suicide Squad,” Robbie was on popular Australian soap opera “Neighbors,” “Pan Am” and in Richard Curtis’s rom-com “About Time.” Then she was cast as Leonardo DiCaprio’s co-star in “The Wolf of Wall Street,” which left people intrigued and wanting more.

But as Jared Leto, her co-star in “Suicide Squad” said, Margot’s role as Harley Quinn was truly admirable. “She took a role that other people would have had a very difficult time with and elevated it to something spectacular,” Leto said in an interview. “To be able to stand alongside Leo [DiCaprio], one of the titans of the industry, and be there face-to-face, blow for blow, and not only hold her ground but really shine, was kind of a rare, explosive discovery.”

Although Robbie first felt like she had nothing in common with her Harley Quinn character, she still went for it. According to her Vogue interview, Robbie was motivated by Harley Quinn’s motto, “You guys are doing it – why shouldn’t I? It’s this man’s world and I’m going to get mine.” And to that, Robbie simply said, “I understand that.”

As “Suicide Squad” director David Ayer explained, Robbie’s role demanded “a lot of heavy lifting for an actor.” But the actress, Ayer said, is “incredibly smart and mature beyond her years. She has ridiculous depth and she’s never been coddled, so she’s very physically courageous.

“The things she was doing herself as far as stunts, you wouldn’t believe. [There are] only a handful of actors who do that sort of work themselves.”

Because she impressed critics and audiences alike, Robbie now has multiple projects lined up to add to her repertoire. Aside from “Gotham City Sirens,” Robbie will also have starring roles in “Goodbye Christopher Robin,” musical comedy “Larrikins” and thriller “Beautiful Things.”

While Robbie has a bright future as an A-list actress, she’s also got new nuptials to celebrate. Aside from making headlines for her acting, the Internet is buzzing about her secret wedding ceremony to longtime boyfriend Tom Ackerley, who was an assistant director for films such as “The Brothers Grimsby” and “Macbeth.”
