Oprah Winfrey had a struggling childhood, having overcome poverty, rape, abuse, loss of a child and race/gender discrimination. After failing at a few television jobs, she was transferred to a new show called, “People are Talking.” She related and interacted with the audience by discussing topics ranging in everything from cooking to sex. Audiences admired her casual and empathizing style.

In 1983, Winfrey accepted a new job in Chicago as the host of a low-rated morning show which eventually became the “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” ranking as the station’s number one spot and earning a total of 34 Emmy Awards.
In 1989, she created Harpo Productions and gained ownership of her talk show, marking her as the first black woman to own a major studio. Go Oprah!
Winfrey has used the show as a platform to educate, inform, give interviews and offer support to different charities. Over time she navigated away from controversial topics and focused more on social and spiritual topics. The talk show lasted for 25 seasons and is ranked one of the highest-rated talk shows in America.
After the talk show ended in 2011, Harpo Productions created “Oprah’s Next Chapter” in its place.
Her production company now owns Harpo Films, Harpo Radio, Harpo Print and Harpo Studios currently based in West Hollywood, California.
In 2011, Winfrey launched her own TV channel, OWN, which includes a mix of documentaries and films.

“Fifteen years ago, I wrote in my journal that one day I would create a television network, as I always felt my show was just the beginning of what the future could hold,” Winfrey stated.

Winfrey also released a digital version of the magazine as an app which gives readers an insight into her life and other cool things connected to her projects.
Oprah Winfrey holds many titles as the queen of TV talk shows, as one of the highest paid celebrities, the richest self-made woman in America, the nation’s highest-paid television entertainer and the first black woman billionaire in history.
