It’s official. In case you haven’t gotten the memo… clean and natural beauty products are the new trend and we’re living for it! Gone are the days of store-bought beauty products full of chemicals and unnecessary additives. Enter the new era of today’s natural beauty routine that doesn’t break the bank. Plus now is the time go get your body looking and feeling its best. There have been major strides in today’s beauty and skincare industry; however there is one particular player that has been gaining the world’s attention. Through its versatile resume of abilities–we’re talking about coconut oil.

Coconut oil can be used in more than just your mom’s fried rice. It can also be used as a phenomenal addition to your everyday beauty routine.

While coconut oil is known for its skincare benefits, let’s not forget what coconut can do for your precious locks. Here are five reasons why you need to add coconut oil in your hair care routine.

1. Longer, Thicker and Healthier Hair

Regardless of what hairstyle or hair type you are currently rocking, who doesn’t want healthier hair? This fruity oil is rich in essential vitamins and fatty acids to help nourish your scalp and penetrate the cuticle of the hair. In an interview with Marie Claire, IGK hairstylist Stephanie Brown says, “coconut oil will definitely help your hair grow healthier, thicker and longer.”

2. Nature’s Natural Frizz Fighter

If there’s one thing that can ruin a good hair day, it’s the unavoidable frizz that can change a look from sleek to freak. The main reason our strands start to frizz is due to the splitting of the hair follicle also known as a split end. To smoothen and hydrate the end of the hair follicle, esteemed hair salon owner and stylist in New York City, Nunzio Saviano tells Today coconut oil is one of the best products to fight the frizz. He says, “the greatest thing about coconut oil is it’s a natural anti-humectant where the molecules are small enough to penetrate the hair shaft.”

3. Give Your Hair Extra Love

If your hair is in need of some TLC, the nutrients found in coconut oil does an amazing job at revitalizing. Stephanie Brown tells Marie Claire, “the heat from the sun [opens up] the [hair] cuticle.”

She goes on to say, “[Coconut oil’s] ingredients have natural protectants that save your hair from sun damage and also protects the hair from drying out or getting brittle from salt water and chlorine.”

So how do we give a little love to our roots? Saviano encourages to share some love to your scalp and roots by “rubbing some [of the] oil directly onto the scalp and roots of your hair to calm itching and help stimulate hair growth.” You can leave it on your scalp for 30 minutes to an hour before thoroughly rinsing.

4. A Mean, Clean, Detoxing Fighting Machine

Now that we know how hydrating and protecting coconut oil is, let’s not forget it is also a great cleaning agent for detoxing and purifying your roots. After using coconut oil in her hair once a week for a month, Lauren Conrad contributor Allison Norton found that by the end of the trial period “[her] strands felt thicker, and shinier, and [her] hair felt stronger and softer in general.”

This happens because coconut oil contains lauric acid and a low molecular weight which allows the oil to penetrate and nourish the hair. Coconut oil has the ability to do this through its vitamins, minerals and rich antioxidants. It also doubles in anti-fungal and antibacterial properties.

5. Dandruff Be Gone!

If you want to get rid of those pesky flakes, try rubbing coconut oil into your scalp for about five minutes. Follow up with a good shampoo while you rinse it out in the shower. Stephanie Brown tells Marie Claire, “rubbing coconut oil in your hair [over time] restores scalp health and reduces flaking.”

With a million products on the market, it can be tricky to know which one to pick. While some may actually do what they claim, why not try out the natural ingredient of coconut oil that’s most likely already in your kitchen? So give it a try because who knows, it might just be the best addition to your beauty regime!
