The idea of love is a funny thing. In today’s day and age, the main threshold of discussion surrounding the topic of love is usually directed towards the dreamboat across the room that you’ve had your eye on for a while now.

For years, writers and poets have created works of written art that speak beautifully of those who we love, admire and hold dear to our hearts (exhibit A being most Shakespearean poems and screenplays). And while there’s totally nothing wrong with remembering to love other people, what often happens is that we become consumed by this need to express our love for the other while forgetting about expressing love for, you guessed it– ourselves. Self-love matters!

As millennial young women, there is so much pressure to please the world but it is usually at the expense of our own fulfillment which is why so many young women are not as fulfilled as they would like. We have so much love to give to others but it is also just as imperative to treat ourselves to a little TLC for the soul.

Similar to taking the time to take a long bath and put on a face mask, they say that poetry is a literary cup of tea that we read to stimulate our minds and souls. So why not take the time to sit down and indulge in some self-love poetry because you deserve it girl!

Serenade yourself with a little love while flipping through these 11 self-love poetry books made to remind you that your greatest love should first and foremost be yourself!

Feeling lonely, unappreciated or depressed? This poetic read consists of poems written to remind readers that pain, sorrow, and loss are inevitably part of life’s journey. We all need to find hope within ourselves in order to move forward from these tough times in order to find life’s ultimate destination – hope.

Dizon preaches on the themes of self-healing, self-love, growth, and vulnerability that are necessary to become the best versions of ourselves.

The theme of self-love is a growing topic of discussion that wasn’t always as heard of in the past. Our society is moving towards a progressive future where women are starting to be encouraged to love themselves for what they look like and ultimately who they are. However, it is imperative that we continue to stimulate our minds with written words that remind us that we are worth just as much love as our partners.

So the next time you’re looking for a genuine pick-me-up, I encourage you not to look at the number of likes your latest photo received from Instagram. It doesn’t need to be Valentine’s Day for you to read a love poem to yourself – from yourself.
