Pop veteran Britney Spears shares the spotlight with rising artist Tinashe in her scandalous new music video, “Slumber Party.”

While the loyal B Army has been praising Spears for her sound and iconic style, much of the buzz is focused on her R&B co-star.

Tinashe had confessed to being nervous about working with someone she admired so much. “The face you make when the rumors are true and you collabed with your idol & basically your whole life is a dream so you keep it cute for Brit but inside you are wigless and dead #slumberparty,” Tinashe wrote on her Instagram last month when announcing the partnership.

While this may very well serve as a launchpad to even bigger things for Tinashe, the singer has already had considerable successes on her own.

In 2012, Tinashe released two critically acclaimed mixtapes, “In Case We Die” and “Reverie,” both of which were created in her home studio. Her third mixtape, “Black Water” came out in 2013, but it was her debut single “2 On” that propelled her into mainstream music. “2 On” peaked at No. 3 on Hot R&B songs in 2014 and No. 24 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Since then, she has worked on her first studio album, “Aquarius,” which was acclaimed by critics as one of the most “solid” debuts by a female artist in years. In 2015, she was nominated for “Best New Artist” at the BET awards.

Many fans have praised Tinashe for her unique style. Her music is a composition of sultry, dark qualities and softness. “I’m just really inspired by R&B, hip-hop and alternative music so I just wanted to combine all three of those for the sound,” Tinashe says. “And the type of person I am, I just find darkness in an interesting way. I just love songs that sound a little crazy, I think it creates an interesting juxtaposition between my voice because it is so bright and soft.”

Early November, Tinashe followed in the steps of pop music elites like Beyoncé and dropped her dark and dreamy 15-song album, “Nightride.” This release is the first of a two-part project, the second of which, “Joyride,” is scheduled to come out early January. And in an interview with Rolling Stone, Tinashe explains that her newest music will fully represent the duality of light and dark within her personality.

As she’s creating her new music, Tinashe remains focused on her craft. “I’ve always had an underdog mentality and I’ve always felt like I have something to prove,” she tells Rolling Stone. “I’m just going to do it my way and do it unapologetically.”
