The first glimpse of Scarlett Johansson in the sci-fi action thriller “Ghost in the Shell” has finally hit the internet.

In the film, based on the classic Japanese manga by Masamune Shirow, Johansson plays a human-cyborg hybrid named Major, who’s working for criminal-hunting task force Section 9.  Her character is “faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out advancements in cyber technology,” according to the film’s synopsis.

The trailer features a short history of Johansson’s character with Major’s designer explaining her human-cyborg origins.

“You were dying. We saved you. Now you save others,” the clip says.

Revealing a nude bodysuit, Major reveals her superhuman abilities as she jumps from tall buildings, smashes into office windows, runs along walls and becomes invisible.

However, Major’s special abilities makes her feels disconnected to the rest of the world. “I know I have a past. I’ll find out who I was,” she says.

News of Johansson’s casting  sparked some backlash from critics who questioned why the director did not cast an Asian woman to play the lead role.  The opposition even started a petition calling for Johansson to be dismissed from the forthcoming remake.

Director Rupert Sanders defends his decision, saying, “I think whenever you cast someone, someone’s going to be critical of it. To me, I stand by my decision. She’s the best actress of her generation, and I was flattered and honored that she would be in this film.”

Also starring Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, and Michael Pitt, “Ghost in the Shell” is set to release March 31, 2017.
