Looking for a fun flick to curl up to tonight? Look no further than Netflix musical documentaries.

Here are some of the best programs to fill your night or weekend with.

Gaga: Five Foot Two

In this 2017 Netflix musical documentary, director Chris Moukarbel takes an intimate look at one of pop music’s most elusive icons. Until recently, Gaga has almost exclusively veiled herself in rhinestones, lace, and even meat.

Her identity behind her stage presence was seldom seen, but Five Foot Two shows us the human behind the flash. Additionally, we get a glimpse of Gaga’s adorable dogs, which is always a plus in my book.

Amy

The late and great Amy Winehouse passed at 27. Fortunately, she didn’t leave before she could leave her mark on music and the world. Known for hits like “Back to Black,” “Rehab” and “Valerie,” Winehouse is a true icon. Nearly a decade after her untimely death, Winehouse’s music continues to top Spotify charts.

Amy, directed by Asif Kapadia, explores Winehouse’s life from humble beginnings to meteoric stardom. The film also deals with the influences that led to her tragic death.

When You’re Strange: A Film About the Doors

Few other musicians helped to define American music in the 1960s more than Jim Morrison and his motley crew: The Doors. Johnny Depp narrates the thoroughly vintage documentary, which delves into the complicated mind of the late singer.

Anecdotes of drug trips and mental anguish fueled the band’s music and eventually contributed to Morrison’s death.

Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child

Rock legend and member of the notorious ‘27 club,’ Jimi Hendrix broke new ground in the music industry throughout his career. Voodoo Child peers into the life of “one of the best guitar players” ever.

Hendrix changed music forever. This documentary travels into the life and mind of the man who rocked Woodstock with songs like “Purple Haze” and “Star Spangled Banner.”

Unlike many docs about “27 club” members, this film is decidedly more celebratory and music-focused than melancholy.

Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce

Beyonce’s famed Coachella concert flick takes artful snapshots of her 2018 performance.

To instill maximum vintage vibes, the film is full of ever-so-slightly grainy footage. Aside from Beyonce’s musical prowess and showmanship, the film takes a glimpse into Ms. Knowles’ personal life. This documentary is sure to become a gold standard for the concert film.

27: Gone Too Soon

A departure from the others on this list, 27: Gone Too Soon takes a reverent yet melancholy look at several music giants. The film tells the tragic ends of some of the most famous names in rock n’ roll history, from Kurt Cobain to Janis Joplin.

The film celebrates the music and lives of Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones, and Jim Morrison, employing interviews with physicians and those who knew the artists before their end.

As an urban legend has fascinated a generation, the 27 club (closely tied to the white lighter curse) provides a jumping off point for a conversation about the music industry’s high highs and lower lows.

If these six Netflix musical documentaries don’t float your boat, there is a wide range of the genre on everybody’s favorite streaming platform.
