Ugh! It happened once again: you got makeup on your favorite shirt, or worse it’s nail polish! Not only did you manage to completely destroy the hard work on your nails, but you also managed to stain your clothing…bummer! It may seem that all hope is lost, but have no fear; here are five steps on how to get nail polish out of clothing, without ruining them!

Step 1: Hurry & Chill

With spilled nail polish, time is of the essence! You must quickly start to apply ice or something cool to the stained area. Be careful not to smudge the polish and further damage the fabric. Once you have chilled the area, drying the polish, lightly touch the stain with the tip of your finger to see if it has hardened. If it has, then you are ready for the next step!

Step 2: Peel It

Now that the polish is dry, it should be possible to remove any excessive flakes off of the fabric. If the area is sticky, keep it cool, so it can dry. You can begin gently scratching the hardened stain. If you need to, use tweezers to gently peel off the polish. How much you are able to remove in this step all depends on the size of the spill and type of fabric you have. Remember peel gently, careful not to ruin the fabric!

Step 3: Blot It

Using a microfiber cloth, or a soft towel, gently blot the area with an acetone-based nail polish remover. If you are not sure how your fabric will hold up, go to your local dry cleaner for other suggestions. Certain fabrics such as cotton, linen, and other natural fabrics are more favorable for the remover. However, acetone nail polish remover may also work well with synthetic fabrics, such as nylon and polyester. Wool, silk, and other delicate high-end fabrics may be compromised. So, be careful!

Step 4: Wash It

Once the stain has diminished, it is now time to run it through the washer to be cleaned. Using a high-quality detergent, proceed to wash only with cold water. Using any other temperature may ruin the fabric. After the washing is finished leave the clothing out to hang and air dry.

Step 5: Wear It Like A Boss!

Now that your favorite top is dry and stain-free, it’s time to put it on and rock the outfit! You’ll look stunning without the stain! The stress of losing a great top is over, and now you can focus on more important things, like enjoying yourself with your girlfriends and shopping for the perfect trendy outfit of the year!

Keep in mind that if these steps do not work, you must consult either your local dry cleaners or use alternative products. Those remedies are sure to get the stubborn stain out! But in the meantime, now you know how to get nail polish out of clothing if there ever is a spill!

And next time, maybe play it safe and wear something old while applying it!
