John Legend shares that his favorite song from his newly released album, “Darkness and Light,” is the one he wrote for his baby girl, Luna.
The ballad, titled “Right By You,” ponders the kind of woman she will become and also reminds his seven-month-old daughter that he “will be there.”
“When I played it for her and Chrissy for the first time, I just started crying because it felt so real to me and felt so appropriate for how I feel as a new father,” he said. “New parents have questions more than they have answers and that’s what we wanted the song to reflect.”

And while “Right by You” is specifically about his feelings towards his daughter, the rest of the album offers a bigger message for Luna. Legend shares that he hopes she grows up to share his passion for social justice.
“I want her to know that she’s in a privileged place, but that there’s a lot of people that are less privileged,” the artist added. “And I want her to be grateful for what she has, but also to be kind and considerate and giving and aware of what’s happening around the world.”
As new parents, John Legend and wife Chrissy Teigen are completely enamored with their daughter.
He even featured his family in his “Love Me Now” music video, which was released last month.
“Christmas with Luna is going to be really exciting,” Legend gushed on Good Morning America. “This is our first time actually having a tree at home, in our new place. And we have a new baby. It’s pretty exciting.”

After struggling to conceive, Teigen’s pregnancy was like a miracle for the couple. “Emotionally, it could be really hard,” Teigen said in March. “You don’t want to get your hopes up, but of course, you do.”
But now that Luna’s around, the couple has been very open about how she’s changed their lives.
“Having been married for a few years and having a baby informs your perspective a bit and makes you look at the world a little bit differently,” Legend said on GMA. “It helped me write songs and be inspired to write better music, I think.”
Perhaps Luna’s presence even inspired him to do his best on his biggest acting gig so far.
Legend plays a bandleader named Keith in “La La Land,” the hotly anticipated movie musical which stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. The Oscar-winning songwriter even composed his own song to perform in the movie.
“La La Land” will be released on Dec. 9, just in time for the holidays.
