4) He never felt like he fit in One Direction.
You may remember Louis Tomlinson for his role in the world-famous boyband One Direction, you may not. During his time with the band, Tomlinson was rarely the one in the spotlight.
But that’s about to change since he’s got some exciting projects ahead of him.
To get you pumped, too, here are some facts you should know about Louis and his career so far.
When the young star originally auditioned for The X Factor, he was rejected not once, but twice. Though he was disheartened, the young singer gave the auditions one last try in 2010. And thank goodness he did.
Unfortunately, he was eliminated before the finals. However, the infamously tough judge Simon Cowell shared more than constructive criticism with Tomlinson. Ultimately, Cowell fostered a connection between him and his fellow contestants to form the band that was later known as One Direction.
In 2016, Tomlinson’s ex-girlfriend Briana Jungwirth gave birth to their son, Freddie. The young hairdresser got pregnant very soon into their short-lived relationship. Because of this, Tomlinson is now undergoing a lengthy battle for shared custody of the toddler.
The couple was no longer together when the pregnancy was revealed and he had already moved on with new girlfriend, Danielle Campbell. In fact, at the time, he was reportedly juggling relationships with two other ladies.
Thus, it goes without saying that the two women were not thrilled to hear the news about the baby – or each other. (Whoops.)
In an interview with The Guardian, Louis Tomlinson disclosed that he had always had an open relationship with his mom, Johanna Deakin. He even came to her for guidance when he lost his virginity in high school.
Thus, his entire world screeched to a halt when Tomlinson’s mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer in early 2016. There were several 1D performances during this time and his face was clearly stricken with grief. At times, he was unsure he could continue performing during this trying period.
Tragically, Tomlinson’s mother passed away in December 2016 and that has taken a toll on all aspects of his life. However, he has managed to work through his grief and he has continued to pursue his aspirations as a musician.
Tomlinson told ABC News that compared to the other 1D members, he felt “forgettable.” He went on to explain how he felt he felt like he wasn’t making a tangible contribution to the band.
He claimed that his lower harmonies in the songs are barely even noticeable on the mixes, while everyone else’s seems to shine through. Additionally, he was the only member of the band to never perform a solo on The X Factor.
Tomlinson told ABC News that Harry has the cool factor, Niall is charming, Liam pumps up the crowd and Zayn has the voice. There just didn’t seem to be a place for Louis on the center stage, but this is now likely to change.
Louis Tomlinson has since overcome his shame of playing a background role in One Direction. Originally, it seemed as though the band was simply taking a break in 2014. Hopes were high that they would come back together again.
However, since Zayn Malik officially left 1D in 2015, the band has not been the same, and a reunion is not likely in near future. All the members are breaking out into independent careers, and Louis Tomlinson is no exception.
At first, Tomlinson did not think he would come out as a solo artist, but then something changed. On a trip to Las Vegas, Louis Tomlinson connected with DJ Steve Aioki to collaborate on an album. The business partners linked up after Aioki’s set at a Vegas nightclub in 2016. They are now hashing out the final touches of the album.
All in all, Louis Tomlinson’s path to stardom has not been straight. Though he is seen as a bit of a background character in One Direction, we certainly hope this isn’t the end of Louis Tomlinson’s story.
It’s clear that the former boyband member is gaining confidence in his own identity and capabilities as a performer. It’s hard not to miss One Direction, but perhaps Louis Tomlinson’s future may hold something even brighter.
