To me, tongue piercing is one of the bravest things you can do as a teenager.

For all of those who have gotten it done, I salute you, because just the thought of a needle going through your tongue freaks me out!

My friends and I had a piercing party when we were 16 years old. For the record, our parents had no idea! We thought it was the cool thing to do in high school. We each got different types of piercings done that day. Some of us had our belly buttons pierced, some had their lips pierced and our brave friend got her tongue pierced.

The idea of having a pretty piece of jewelry pierced into your skin was such a cool thing at the time as a means of expression — not to mention it was a little rebellious for us. Sorry, Ma!

Tongue piercing was not originally on the list of things that I wanted to get pierced, and I was a little apprehensive about things going awry.

It’s important to note that it’s actually a pretty safe organ to pierce because it heals itself pretty quickly.

Here are some tips to help convince you that it’s totally safe:

1 One of the main benefits of having your tongue pierced is the freedom of expression.

2 Tongue piercings are discreet    and much less visible compared to other piercings on your face.

3 You can also get creative and pick out many different types of tongue piercings.

4 Peace of mind for you: Your tongue will heal quickly with very little chance of infections if properly treated.

5 The piercing can also be  easily removed  with no scarring.

6 It adds   sexual excitement  after it has properly healed. Tongue wrestle perhaps?

If you’re still thinking about piercing your tongue, keep in mind there will be some maintenance according to OccupyTheory’s pros and cons list to consider.  Safety first.

What to stay away from if you decide to pierce your tongue:

1 No smoking or drinking alcohol allowed after a piercing. None. Nada.

2 You must use non-alcoholic mouthwash.

3 Stay away from aspirin (which causes blood thinning).

4 Avoid hot drinks (which irritate the tongue).

5 Do not engage in oral sex while it heals.

6 Hands off, no touching! This can lead to bad bacteria.

As mentioned before, tongue piercing is a freedom of expression and you are allowed to express yourself however you desire. If you are afraid of what society might think of it, who cares! If that’s the only thinking holding you back, go for it!

All that matters is that you are safe and happy with your decision, so pierce away.  Unlike tattoos, piercings are not forever and you can get rid of them whenever you want.

Me, personally, I’ve always been more open to piercings than permanent ink on my body. I went through my experimental phases having my lower belly button pierced, my nose (which I still have) and my lower lip pierced twice and don’t regret any of them.

Would I do them again? Sure, why not! My only advice is to make sure it is done by a licensed professional.

Piercings are not everyone’s thing. Perhaps you’re scared of the pain or it possibly getting infected — as long as it’s not that you’re worried about what others might think of you. I get that it’s not for everyone, but if you really want it, I say go for it!
