ENTITY- The Most Memorable Advice I Received from ENTITY Academy SEO Mentors

ENTITY Academy’s SEO and Digital Storytelling Boot Camp isn’t only a writing workshop. It’s a unique experience where soon-to-be professionals are given advice and tips from different mentors that can be helpful in the work-world and life in general.

Entity Mag mentees were introduced to ENTITY Academy SEO mentors, successful women leaders in their fields to share their experiences and advice. We heard perspectives from writers, marketing experts, CEO’s of non-profits and companies that introduce women to innovative products, artists and activists.

These are the pieces of advice that were the most memorable to me.

It’s all about perspective.

The competition out there is tough. Sometimes people will see the value you could bring to their company, sometimes they don’t.

Aimee Westbrook, who’s helped grow several well-established tech companies, shared her experiences and vulnerabilities during her new job search. While she admitted that she’s faced a lot of rejection, which can feel discouraging and increase her self-doubt, she emphasized that it’s about perspective. When she didn’t get the job offer she really wanted, it opened up another door of opportunities for her. In her speech, she said that it wasn’t the job for her to have, not because she isn’t competent or good enough, but maybe because a better fit was waiting behind another door. As she said, “Good news, bad news – who knows?”

A positive and optimistic attitude allows you to maintain faith and keep going with resilience.

It’s not networking, it’s building long-lasting relationships.

People always tell me networking is crucial. But, as an introvert who doesn’t like small talk, I tend to feel insincere when networking.

Sarah Zapp said that’s because networking is transactional. It’s creating connections with the intention to receive something from someone else. Instead of prioritizing networking, we should value building long-lasting connections. We can do so by offering our help to others rather than merely asking for somebody else’s.  People will remember you for that. Our ENTITY Academy SEO mentors taught us to be givers, but know our boundaries. Sooner or later, the help you give will be the help you get.

Business is personal.

“When you are emotional at work, you are being unprofessional.” That’s what Michelle Wolf was told, but she disagrees.

There’s nothing wrong with showing empathy and caring passionately about your work and the people you work with. Empathy and compassion make you a better leader because when your co-workers and employees feel that you care about them and their work, they care about you and doing a great job in return. Leading with compassion and empathy creates a sense of community and loyalty among you and your team.

Being vulnerable is valuable.

Throughout the seven weeks as an Entity Mag mentee, both my internal mentors and my co-mentees have shown me that it is Okay to be vulnerable and more so, it’s valuable to yourself and to others.

Sharing one’s fears, concerns, painful experiences and unpopular opinions can feel freeing to you and allow others who have the same vulnerabilities as you feel less alone. It opens up a dialogue where people can learn from each other, connect and possibly feel a sense of belonging.

My ENTITY Academy SEO mentors and my co-mentees have shared their vulnerabilities and thereby not only allowed me to learn as an Entity Mag mentee about their perspectives and experiences, but also shown me that we all have insecurities that connect us but yet unique perspectives from which others can learn.
