SET THE ATMOSPHERE

According to Family Centre’s mental health therapist, your home counterweights your daily stress level. Décor, color, and light can all affect how you feel in a room. If used thoughtfully, they can soothe your nerves and calm your mind.

Set the atmosphere by dimming the lights and lighting an aromatherapy candle. Follow this by pouring your favorite drink, and playing your favorite tunes. Setting the atmosphere looks different for each person. For some, setting the atmosphere looks like listening to jazz music while sipping on a glass of wine. For others, this looks like enjoying a bar of chocolate while watching their favorite rom-com.

Sciencedirect suggests that self-care is manifested through a set of behaviors intended at keeping a healthy balance, such as personal hygiene, a healthy and nutritious diet, and activities that provide quality of life. Additionally, they report that self-care can aid in the search for well-being and happiness, and can include activities for emotional and cognitive development, calming the mind, maintaining self-awareness, performing spiritual practices, and getting in touch with nature, among others.

Learning this has encouraged me to set the atmosphere by engaging in activities that foster emotional well-being like sitting in a dimly lit room next to a lavender aromatherapy candle. As the candle burns, I enjoy my favorite shrimp and pasta dish and sip on a refreshing peach tea. All while watching Carrie Bradshaw and the girls on HBO Max’s classic series “Sex and the City.”

TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY AND MIND

Next, treat yourself to a skin-renewing cleanser and face mask and just relax. Afterward, cleanse your face with water and use a skin-renewing face toner to renew your glow.

Next, prioritize your mental and emotional health by reading your favorite book or watching your favorite movie, all while enjoying your favorite snack. This is the ultimate form of self-care according to the mental health service BetterHelp because it covers essential practices and involves taking care of yourself in all aspects, including your mental and emotional health.

CREATE A RELAXED ENVIRONMENT

Lastly, elevate this Self-Care Sunday by creating a relaxed and well-organized environment. This is key to feeling your best at home. According to psychologist Sherrie Bourg Carter in Benefab clutter can play a significant role in how we feel about our homes, our workplaces, and ourselves. Messy homes and work spaces leave us feeling anxious, helpless, and overwhelmed. Yet, rarely is clutter recognized as a significant source of stress in our lives.
