I’ve never been the best at school. From missed classes, sub-par grades, no communication with teachers, to just a simple lack of effort, I wasn’t operating at my full potential. But ENTITY’s Writer’s Collective+ changed that for me!
Back in May, I was feeling lost and stuck. I was working a sales job that I hated and wanted to get back into marketing. The ads Gods (or just people doing their job right and tracking Google searches) must’ve heard my prayer and delivered me an ad for ENTITY Academy’s Writer’s Collective+ in collaboration with UCLA Extension. I was intrigued since the post mentioned bolstering writing skills as well as teaching paid media strategy and digital marketing. Finally! Something interesting!
In college, I majored in communication studies with a concentration in media and society and minored in marketing. I found that I LOVED everything about marketing, from consumer behavior to creating “postable” content. So when I saw the ad for ENTITY Academy, I knew this was an opportunity to gain more skills in a field I love.
What I didn’t expect from the Writer’s Collective+, however, was all of the support and additional resources they have to offer!
One thing that was extremely relieving to learn was that ENTITY Academy not only cares about developing the “hard skills” but the “soft skills” as well. And this starts with self-care and reflection. Often, there were exercises where we had to try out new breathing exercises or reflect on our learning strategies. It was a breath of fresh air for an educational institution to care so much about our mental well-being and development as a person, not just as a student.
There was also plenty of being a student, however! Not only was I meeting once a week for a live class, but I had access to a mentor who could answer questions about the course/assignments as well. This was massive because I finally got to practice my communication skills in an educational setting. Asking for help was huge for me as it’s something I’ve always struggled with.
In addition to one-on-one meetings with my counselor, there were “Fireside Chats” with notable alumni and industry professionals, plenty of assignments and opportunities for bonus points, and even a career center. Having access to a career counselor is one of the most surprising and exciting aspects of ENTITY Academy for me. I did not expect to have, even after the course finished, access to such professionals.
Even before the course was completed I was able to update my resume per their professional recommendations and even create a portfolio featuring the work I’ve done throughout the course. All of this along with tips on how to better utilize LinkedIn as well as my college alumni database. I’m so excited to implement these tips and move on to the next step in my life and career.
