Entity's take on self-growth during the summer internship.

Before I worked at Entity, I had had two internship experiences, one remote and the other in London. While working at the remote internship, it was largely informal; the only thing I had to worry about was meeting a weekly deadline, which meant I generally worked one night a week. While in London, I was not only working, but studying as well. This meant that my schedule depended upon my classes, and that I was not working full-time.

However, since I have been working at Entity, I have learned about what it’s like working in a full-time work environment. Where I had previously only worked with four other people, I am now working with 15, and it is a big transition. We are a large group of women working together, and sometimes our personalities clash, but it’s what will make the website versatile.

When I left my job in London, my boss there told me the importance of communication. Now as a person who doesn’t particularly enjoy communicating with others, this was a difficult shift for me. However as I have settled into life at Entity, I have come to appreciate the value of communication in a work place. I have learned the value of my own ability to communicate with others and pitching my own ideas. Where I was once reluctant to put my ideas forth, more content to take a back seat, I have learned that it’s okay to speak up when I have an idea or something to say.

However without communication there isn’t an opportunity for growth because no one is sure of what anyone else is doing, and it breeds a negative attitude. It causes dissent among the ranks, speculation about certain things grow, and it isn’t conducive to a productive work environment. I have learned that it is important for there to be an open line of communication from the top down and the bottom up. Without it, people are left floundering in the middle with nowhere to go.
