The legendary Susan Georget gave ENTITY Mag seven tips for those who aspire to become a plus-size model.

Georget began her career in 1986 with Plus Model Management where she signed the first-ever plus-size supermodel Emme. She headed Wilhelmina’s first-ever curve division signing some of the most famous plus-size models we know and love like Ashley Graham, Marquita Pring, Candice Huffine, and Liris Crosse.

“I’m driven by 3 things … the look on a model’s face when she is booked for the first time after years of being told … “ you’d be so pretty “if”( lost weight) , that my children are proud of me and I can take care of them… and … for everyone, and there were plenty , that said it was impossible for a plus girl to be ________fill in the blank”

-Susan Georget

Georget now heads State Management’s curve division in New York where she is dedicated to bringing the best out of every woman. The following are the plus-size modeling requirements she looks for when adding to her impressive roster.

1. Height and Dress Size

The industry standard used to be 5’9 and over. Today, Georget says she’s excited about anyone with a spark no matter the height as long as your dress size is an eight and up.

2. Age

Rather you’re a teenager or well into your 90’s. The world of plus-size modeling will accept you. Over at State Management, Georget welcomes women of all ages.

3. Social Media

Social media doesn’t matter as much as it did two years ago within the fashion industry. Though clients still refer to your social media to get a feel for who you are, there’s no need to buy followers. No matter the number of followers you have, the important thing is to make sure your following is real and engaging.

4. Personal Style

Clients want to spend money on models who have their own personal style. With that being said, pay attention to the latest trends you may see on social media or on the streets. Try to incorporate some of the styles that inspire you into your own wardrobe.

5. Location

Although Georget represents women across the world, New York is the ideal location if you want to be a plus-size model. Since New York is the fashion capital of the world, it’s easier to meet and work with a greater amount of clients. Living in New York will improve your chances to make more money.

6. Health

Health is wealth! If you’re serious about becoming a plus-size model it’s important to be in shape no matter what size you are. Some people assume plus-size models have the freedom to eat whatever they want without working out, but this isn’t the case. There’s plenty of plus-size models, including Ashley Grahm, who prove staying in shape is a priority.

7. Digitals

Most agencies will sign you based on the digitals you send them. A “digital” is a photo Georget suggests should be in the middle of a mugshot and glamour shot. You wouldn’t want to beat your face like you’re recording a tutorial video for YouTube. In this case, less is more.

Another important requirement when sending over digitals is to include a full-length photo showing your body. Your prospective agent wants to see all of you from head to toe.
