The dazzling effects of one cruelty-free brand.
Beauty by POPSUGAR, founded by Lisa Sugar, Editor-in-chief of POPSUGAR, promises healthy ingredients, cruelty-free products, and easily applicable makeup that creates gorgeous looks. In this article, I will be reviewing two of the company’s most popular lip products.
Today, I had the privilege of receiving free samples of their Be Cosmic Crystal Liquid Lip in Fairidescent and Be Sweet Tinted Lip Balm with SPF 15 in Daydreamer.
To promote its brand as a health-conscious makeup company, Beauty by POPSUGAR’s packaging features an all white box with a light and dark blue watercolor flower design. The front of the package says “BEAUTY by POPSUGAR” in three different fonts. Overall, the packaging looks clean and bright.
When you open the box and take out the lip balm, the packaging looks the same, but without writing. So, there is a giant open white space. Though the company has “clean” products, the lack of color makes the product seem cheap. Not to mention the lightweight feel of the product makes it seem like the quality of a drugstore brand.
Now on the other hand, the appearance of the liquid lip tube makes it look addicting before you even put it on. The lip gloss tube is clear so customers can see what they’re about to apply. Like the name of the color sounds, the liquid looks like fairy dust or unicorn blood, if they ever existed. It’s holographic, and as you turn the tube, blues, oranges, greens, and purples jump out at you.
But, as you apply the liquid lip, the holographic-ness quickly dissolves into a glorious shine. If you turn your head just as you did with the tube, you might be able to make out very faint hints of the colors you just saw when it was in its casing. But anyone who isn’t looking that closely will spot a glistening lip. And, it’s non-sticky and very moisturizing! If you are an Aquaphor junkie like me, this is a glamorous alternative.
The tinted lip balm is essentially a chapstick with a berry overtone. It is also very moisturizing and has a convenient slanted surface for easy application. Its saturating properties make the finish slightly shiny, not matte like many lipsticks can be. And, because it’s meant as a temporary stain, the balm will wear off. What I didn’t expect though, is for it to wear off so quickly. In a matter of half an hour, the color was gone. What I do give POPSUGAR is that the color itself is beautiful, and suits most skin tones.
Despite slightly disappointing packaging, all in all, POPSUGAR’s Tinted Lip Balm and Be Cosmic Crystal Liquid Lip are easy to use, and the effects are beautiful when first applied. I personally would recommend the Liquid Lip over the Lip Balm due to its longer-lasting properties, packaging, and gorgeous color.
